On May 24, SME sent a press release, confirming his DUI and announcing Kangin's hiatus:

"This is SM Entertainment.
Kangin's DUI accident is true. He went to the police station this afternoon after being contacted and was investigated at the scheduled time.
Kangin is deeply reflecting after this incident. He'll be taking time to reflect and stopping all entertainment-related activities.
Once again, we sincerely apologize for causing worry."

As previously reported, Kangin was driving under the influence of alcohol when he hit a streetlight and fled the scene. In related news, Kangin was also charged with a DUI and hit and run in 2009.

It looks like fans will have to wait for Kangin to return.

I love SJ and i wont defend Kangin in any way. He should have called a taxi if he knew he drank over the limit %. Im glad no one got hurt!! Kangin has been through this once and it has been REALLY hard for him to face fans, family and his colleague, i dont know why he impulsive drive again in his drunk-state. But knowing Kangin he is smarter than this, sth hearbreaking must have happen or he is going through sth difficult we dont know of which make him repeat the same mistake. He is strong and can handle situation pretty well in a good manner, unless u really pissed him off, then he might hit u. But decide to drive drunk knowing this will affect SJ,fans, his career and his image to the public+ppl he work with i think sth badly must have happen to him. Doesnt matter what i hope this "reflecting time" will make he think careful abt the difficulty he went through in the past(he had a hard time to even face the cam), and how a car accident can cause death which can put an end to everything(not to mention SJ almost died under car accident many times bc of sasaeng chasing). Im disappointed but i have faith in him. I hope in the future he will think b4 he act, doesnt matter what kind of situation he is facing. I know he is suffering but he should not cause anybody harm or make any accident bc of that! Whatever it is i hope your problem will be resolved and u will come back like a new person!

When you're drunk you obviously don't make clear decisions. The problem is him deciding to drink in the first place, without a friend or driver to take care of him. He was irresponsibe. I'm not sure how drunk he was, but him not checking to see what he hit, that goes to show the effects of what drinking can do to you. It's beyond dangerous. He turned himself in, so I'm sure he will do what needs to be done by law.

Maroonminion14 Wednesday, May 25, 2016

I think people should leave him alone. Everyone makes mistakes and they have to face the consequences. People need to let the law take control and not have a go at him or anone else. Yes what he did was bad and idiotic but like I said before, it is being delt with and people shouldn't be so quick to judge without knowing all the details.

afterglows Maroonminion14 Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Is that why you're downvoting anyone criticizing him?

meganeve18 Maroonminion14 Wednesday, May 25, 2016

"Without knowing details," honey, the video of him drunk driving is out, he admitted to it, and they found out his blood alcohol level is .157% over the .1% limit. Delulu or just plain stupid?

propanda Maroonminion14 Thursday, May 26, 2016

He committed DUI no matter the details and DUI is very bad as crime. If you have read other comments you will notice that many of the commentors have actually lost people cause someone committed DUI. This is his second time as well so people have right to be angry at him.

LOOOOL you're an idiot

xxgiri Wednesday, May 25, 2016

I knew why I always thought this guy is an idiot. what if he killed someone? are you able to use your hands to drink but not to call a cab to take your drunk ass home? jesus christ. I hope he will get the punishment he deserves.

Kitty4 Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Oppaaaa!!! How could you do this, what if you got hurt, or someone else got hurt! I'm so mad at him right now, I wanna hit u oppa! >< You even had so many things going for you right all the singles that were released :(We're mad and disappointed at you because we love you oppa

Kitty4 Wednesday, May 25, 2016

What the hell oppa!! Not again! And you even spent years reflecting and saying that you will forever be sorry towards ELF (and SuJu) for that incident :( Every time you said that I was all like "that was in the past kangin, it's okay now. I'm proud that you became so manly" :( <

xloveseoul Wednesday, May 25, 2016

He needs to get his license revoked. It didn't happen one time, this is his second. Take his license already.

Miriyam Wednesday, May 25, 2016

It could said a mistake if he did it the first time, but its second time already. Whats the point on reflecting now, you should reflect at the first accident.

joseph_dc Tuesday, May 24, 2016

If you guys are truly Kangin's fans, then you shouldn't defend him. Make him realize his faults so that he could truly change. If we want a safer world, we need to give criminals their rightful punishments and appropriate counseling to prevent them from killing innocent people.

galaxyifan Tuesday, May 24, 2016

People, I said earlier that people shouldn't defend him because what he did was messed up, but you have no right to call him names, or his members, or his family names, that's messed up from you as well. Yes, Kangin was really immature in this case, but hate won't help. He's still a human being after all. Learn the difference between criticizing and bullying.

afterglows galaxyifan Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Immature? A teenager throwing a fit is immature. Kangin is a 31-year-old man who knowingly used a motor vehicle while inebriated. That's not immature, that's downright reckless, and he could have killed or seriously injured someone. He's an idiot, that's what he is.

galaxyifan afterglows Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Immature, do you know what does it mean? He was immature, because a mature person would think like an adult, a real mature adult, and he wouldn't drive while being drunk, if he was more mature than that. You can't mesure a person intelligence based on what they did on one situation. I'm very disappointed myself, but insulting him won't take you nowhere. You're the idiot here, thinking that only teenagers can be immature. If you were smart and mature yourself, you'd know how to criticize people. Insulting and hating won't help the situation. We shouldn't defend him, but if we bash him that won't help either. He was reckless, and immature to do what he did, and wrong. That's what we can say, saying he is an idiot? How would that help anyway. We wish for this not to happen again. It's thanks to idiots like you that our society is barely going anywhere. Hate doesn't take you anywhere. Criticism does. Be mature and wise in the future, because mature and wise people don't talk like you do.

afterglows galaxyifan Wednesday, May 25, 2016

It would do your EXTREMELY well to get off your high horse, Calling him a reckless individual is not a term meant to measure intelligence. In criminal law, reckless is one of the four possible categories of of someone's mental state, i.e., mens rea. Though I am not sure Korea runs on the same mens rea system, attempting to find a parallel within the U.S. legal system isn't exactly a bad thing.

It would also do you well to read properly before taking it to an extreme, since my teenager example is one of many. I wasn't going to go off and rattle every single instance of immaturity when one should be more than enough. At least, I expected it to be so. If anyone's been attacking someone, it's you, because you completely misconstrued every single thing I said and proceeded to overreact based off of it, and you continue doing so unnecessarily.

I am not hating on him, I'm calling him out on what he did and what he is. It would do you well to follow your OWN advice, because you're lacking a bit of maturity yourself. How's that example of immaturity work out for you?

meganeve18 afterglows Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Thank you for giving the FACTS instead of bullshit emotions!!!

galaxyifan afterglows Wednesday, May 25, 2016

you called him an idiot? I used reckless too, if you can't read my texts right don't expect me to read them right. You said teengaers could be immature, I'm telling you Kangin was immature in this case, that's a fact. He did wrong, that's a fact too. He was reckless, yet another one. But you said he was an idiot, that's not a fact, that's being hateful, not criticizing. Please don't pretend you didn't write that, you're arguing over something I never said. You were indeed hating on him.

galaxyifan meganeve18 Wednesday, May 25, 2016

did I say Kangin was innocent? I'm not being emotional, I'm being right there. We must criticize what's wrong (his behavior) but hating on him won't change, learn the difference. What facts even?
