Ailee has finally released her much anticipated mini-album, 'Magazine.' With the swag of Beyonce and the vocal range of Kelly Clarkson, K-Pop's number 1 diva is back stronger than ever. Let's take a look at her five new tracks!
Ailee belts it out in her title track, "Don't Touch Me." The track has an up-tempo beat similar to her hit, "U&I." The song includes a piano backtrack with claps and tambourines, giving the song a vintage feel. I'm in love with the beat and tone of the verses. The song is empowering with strong lyrics such as, "Don't say my name, I don't want to hear it," "Go away somewhere far away," and, "I don't love you." Girl knows how to get her point across that the love is over and that she's moved on--she sings with a vengeance making me feel the slightest bit bad for whoever hurt her.
While the music video is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of originality, she has a ton of cool looks in the video. From her sitting on a piano to close-ups in an overexposed room and her dancing against a brick wall, there is nothing we have not seen before--then there's the random Austin Powers-like scene included, as well. Although I don't understand the concept of the video--aside from the, "I'm looking good and you should feel sorry," theme--I am a big fan of the video. Simply, Ailee is looking amazing. Her confidence exudes stronger than ever in this music video which is what tips me over.
From "Don't Touch Me," she slows down the tempo with the next track, "Crazy." This track has a hip hop vibe with the slightest hint of jazz in the back track, making for a romantic mood. Her voice perfectly compliments the smooth flow of Dynamic Duo, who features in the song. This heartfelt song about loving someone, as made clear in the hook, "Still in love with you," may be a stark contrast from her tone in "Don't Touch Me," but this song is no less strong. Her soulful voice comes through beautifully in this track.
"Crazy" eases into"Goodbye Now." This track is a heartbreaking song about someone letting go of someone they love so that they can move on. "Goodbye Now" would be the perfect OST for a dramaI can just imagine a tear rolling down the protagonist's face as they painfully break up with their lover for a selfless reason. Ailee, again, sings beautifully and with each high note she hits, she pulls another heartstring.
Her next track, "Love Sick," starts with a strumming electric guitar, giving off the slightest hint of an 80s sound. The song is an urban pop track about getting over an ex-lover. Although the lyrics are sad, the track is a feel good track with a chorus that has a similar vibe toher previous single, "SingingGot Better."
"Teardrop" is the final song on her mini-album. The song sounds Western influenced with a simple piano introduction--with the first "Uh," the track layers on a repetitive beat and synthesizers. This, too, is a heartbreak song about being alone and without "the one." The hook is catchy with the short-breathed"tdooktdook tdook"and "koong koong koong," which lead into the powerful, "It rains in my heart [...]" chorus. This track, although not the most original sounding, is one of my favorite on the album.
Overall, I am a fan of this album. It's difficult to go wrong with Ailee's vocals, but that unfair advantage aside, the tracks are individually solid songs. I also like that she kept an overall theme with the album, and you can tell it came from the heart--with each note she belts out, you can feel the emotion she's feeling. Lastly, she took a big part in the creation of this album, which is always a plus for an artist!
