On June 27, actor Jin Tae Hyun shared on social media that he has been discharged from the hospital following surgery for thyroid cancer.

“I’m finally being discharged,” he began. “Hospitalization, surgery, and recovery all went perfectly. I’m so grateful to my wife, who became my hands and feet for the past few days. Thank you to my friends and fans who continue to support and pray for me. I’ll be taking time to rest and go on walks so I can recover slowly and healthily, especially since I have a commercial shoot and a broadcast recording scheduled in just three weeks.”

He continued, “Starting tomorrow, I’ll begin morning walks. Don’t worry, I won’t push myself too hard. I plan to walk slowly at Hanam Stadium and Olympic Park where I used to train. Why? Because after I was diagnosed with cancer, I made a promise to run a marathon later this year. I want to hold myself accountable to that promise, and walking is the first step. There’s a world of difference between trying and failing versus not trying at all. Having the right mindset is important. You gain nothing without effort. I’ll do my best again.

Full letter from Jin Tae Hyun:

"Hello, this is Jin Tae Hyun. I hope everyone is well. I’m finally being discharged. Hospitalization, surgery, and recovery all went perfectly. I’m so grateful to my wife for becoming my hands and feet these past few days. Thank you to my friends and fans who continue to support and pray for me.

I have a commercial shoot and a recording coming up in three weeks, so I plan to recover gradually with rest and walks. I went into this with a plan from the start to handle all upcoming schedules, so I scheduled the hospitalization and surgery accordingly. So far, everything has gone perfectly.

Don’t believe any false rumors about me leaving TV or starting chemotherapy. I was worried about possible aftereffects like voice changes, muscle pain, or headaches, but thankfully, I’ve had none of that, thanks to my strong body and spirit as a former marathoner. My voice is intact, and I’ve experienced no pain. Still, it was a major surgery, so I’m diligently taking my medication and managing everything down to the smallest detail so I can quickly and healthily return to my normal life.

While sitting in the cancer ward, I had a lot of thoughts. I realized I need to throw away unnecessary things and fill myself only with what is clear and pure. I’ve been living doing too many things I didn’t need to do. From now on, I want to keep my life tidy and organized. Often, we mistake things that aren’t ours for ours. Letting go just a little can bring clarity. Excessive greed wears us down and causes emotional pain. When a choice feels difficult or wrong, we need to reflect—either push through it with effort and responsibility or recognize the mistake and start over. In any case, it’s a learning process.

But I’ve decided not to waste time anymore. Time isn’t given for free—it’s a limited gift that comes with responsibility. As I sat in my hospital room today, I thought: “Let’s live appropriately to our circumstances, but sincerely and diligently.” That’s the only way to live a truly responsible life.

Sometimes, God gives us the gift of pain and hardship. When my daughter Tae Eun went to heaven, I made a promise to God to be thankful and stay steady even through future hardships. A promise is a responsible action, and this time too, I’ve kept my promise with God by successfully undergoing surgery with the love and support of my wife.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll begin morning walks. Don’t worry.I won’t overdo it. But I plan to walk at Hanam Stadium and Olympic Park, where I used to train. Why? Because I promised to run a marathon in the second half of the year after being diagnosed with cancer. I want to fulfill that promise, and walking is the first step. Trying and failing is worlds apart from not trying at all. Having the right mindset is so important. Nothing is gained without sweat.

I’ll give it my all again. Let's go!"
