Agust D is celebrating his 5th debut anniversary

It's been 5 years since Min Yoongi (BTS's Suga) decided to show the world his most real side: Agust D. With a mixtape released on August 15, 2016, containing 10 songs, Min Yoongi spoke up about his early years as a boy who dreamed of becoming a music producer, the failures he had been through and how these situations affected him to the point of dealing with mental health issues.

It is known that these topics are very controversial in South Korea, but Min Yoongi wanted to show his reality, and he needed to express all of his emotions through music. BTS's creator and producer, Bang PD, allowed him to produce his own mixtape, create the lyrics by himself and throw the pain away in the songs. Under this concept and being known as SUGA, both by producing and rapping in BTS, Min Yoongi called himself SUGA DT, but just backward. In order to differentiate his work from that of his work as Suga, he developed the alter ego "Agust D," which is derived from the initials DT, short for his birthplace, Daegu Town, and "Suga" spelled backwards.

Daegu is his hometown and the place that has seen this young star grow up, from writing songs and selling them on the streets, the fights with his parents that he had talked about many times, how he was part of an underground hip hop group where he called himself "Gloss," which is the literal meaning in English of his Korean name, the fact that he had to choose between taking a bus or eating due to his poverty, and the dream that wasn't going away. This place undoubtedly has a strong bond with Min Yoongi, who has described his days and had included the letter "D" as the fancy touch to his solo artist name.

He decided to release his debut mixtape in Soundcloud instead of releasing the project as a commercial studio album, describing it as the "feeling of being trapped in some sort of framework." He raps about depression, social phobia, and anxiety, his three dearest enemies of his 20s years, where he got injured many times and kept fighting for having a dream. The mixtape was described as having a "hardcore" rap style with some underground influence and had been praised by Billboard due to Min Yoongi's total participation as the producer and creator.

The songs in this mixtape also call out to all those who had criticized BTS career in such a negative way, to those who, according to Agust D, wanted to have his fame and wanted to take him down. Self-confidence is shown, and his genius side was proven. Of course, the mixtape included collaborations with artist Suran for "So Far Away," with Yankie for "Tony Montana," and with DJ Friz for "Intro: DT sugA," plus the Big Hit's producers and the voices of his bandmates RM, j-hope and Jungkook. A dialogue with his older brother, Min Geum Jae, can be heard in "Skit." His brother is the one to push Yoongi for auditioning in Seoul back in 2010.

After 5 years of his solo debut and becoming a worldwide known artist due to his complete background in the musical industry, Min Yoongi keeps making history by himself thanks to his recent projects, such as becoming the producer of a renewed "Over the Horizon" tone for Samsung, as a model for Louis Vuitton and a producer in the top ten of Billboard charts, adding the fact of representing multiple global brands alongside BTS.

Happy 5th anniversary to the one and only king, Agust D!
