'The Remarried Empress,' an upcoming Disney+ original series starring Shin Min Ah, is already drawing sharply divided reactions after the release of a short preview video and still images.
On January 22, Disney+ unveiled a lineup video previewing its 2026 releases, along with still cuts from several upcoming projects. Soon after, clips and images from 'The Remarried Empress' spread quickly across social media and online communities, fueling active discussion.
The preview introduces viewers to a fictional empire inspired by medieval Western Europe. Western-style court fashion and palace architecture are used to visually construct the imaginary Eastern Empire, highlighting the drama’s romance fantasy setting.
In the footage, a ceremonial carriage procession appears against the backdrop of a grand palace. Shin Min Ah, who plays the empress, is seen wearing a pure white gown while being attended by her ladies-in-waiting. Lee Jong Suk, portraying Heinrey, stands at the center of the hall in an ornate uniform, surrounded by nobles and officials dressed in elaborate European-style attire. The overall visual direction strongly emphasizes a classical medieval European atmosphere.
While the lavish sets, costumes, and classical mise-en-scène left a strong impression even in the brief preview, reactions from viewers have been sharply divided. Some netizens voiced discomfort, leaving comments such as “It feels like cosplay,” “It’s pretty, but seeing Korean actors wearing Western clothes and acting in that setting feels jarring,” and “I’ve never watched a drama hoping the characters wouldn’t feel Korean.” Others remarked, “It feels like a historical drama filmed by foreigners,” and “Hearing Korean actors call each other by Western names still feels awkward.”
In contrast, many viewers responded positively, saying, “It actually looks fun,” “This works better than I expected,” “It’s less cringey than I thought,” and “The preview raised my expectations.” Some compared its tone to Bridgerton, noting that it feels closer to a polished Western-style romance fantasy rather than a novelty project. Comments such as “It looks like they really spent the budget” and “I’m cautiously excited” also appeared.
'The Remarried Empress' is based on one of Naver Webtoon’s most popular romance fantasy series. Since early news of its live-action adaptation, the project has consistently attracted attention due to its casting and questions surrounding its overall visual and narrative direction.
Although the story takes place in a fictional world, its strong focus on aristocratic society, royal balls, and elaborate Western-style court culture has long raised concerns about the difficulty of adapting it into live action. The choice to have Korean actors use Western-style names has also been cited as a potential obstacle to viewer immersion.
As doubts about immersion continue, opinions remain mixed even after the preview’s release. In that sense, 'The Remarried Empress' is already showing an unusual pre-release trajectory, drawing both anticipation and skepticism well ahead of its premiere. The passionate fanbase of the original work, combined with the inherently niche appeal of the romance fantasy genre, has resulted in especially polarized reactions.
Still, given that romance fantasy worlds are inherently unfamiliar by nature, some view this attempt itself as meaningful. If the series ultimately delivers a polished and convincing final product, it could open the door to new creative possibilities for Korean dramas.
With its release scheduled for the second half of the year, attention is now focused on whether 'The Remarried Empress' can move beyond preconceptions and ongoing debate to successfully bring the beloved original to life, and whether it can persuade viewers on both sides of the divided response.
