In the early days of K-pop, the industry followed a rigid "factory" model where agencies handled every creative detail. Over time, however, many artists began taking a more active role in creating their own music. From writing lyrics to composing and producing entire tracks, several idols have proven their creative abilities by crafting songs that not only topped charts but also defined their careers.

Here are some idol-produced K-pop songs that became career-defining hits, proving that K-pop idols are not just performers but also creative forces behind their music.

BIGBANG - "LIES"

“LIES” is the Big Bang of self-produced idols. Before this, the legendary K-pop boy band was a struggling YG boy group. This track established G-Dragon as a genius producer and shifted the entire K-pop industry toward the "self-produced" model.

WINNER - "REALLY REALLY"

After a member's departure, WINNER pivoted the group to a tropical house sound. The self-produced track “Really Really” became a massive public hit, proving they didn't need a usual K-pop sound to dominate.

iKON - "LOVE SCENARIO"

LOVE SCENARIO” became a national phenomenon in South Korea, topping the charts for many consecutive weeks. It established B.I as a top-tier "Hit-Maker" and proved that an idol-produced song could dominate the entire country, from toddlers to the elderly.

I-dle - "TOMBOY"

Written, composed, and arranged by I-dle’s leader Soyeon, “TOMBOY” is regarded as their ultimate career-defining hit. Released after one of the group’s most challenging periods, the song revived their career and solidified them as a top-tier girl group, while securing their first PAK.

Stray Kids - "GOD’S MENU"

Stray Kids’ "God’s Menu" is that self-produced career-defining hit that transformed them from rising rookies into global stardom. Produced by their in-house trio 3RACHA, the track established their signature "Mala Taste" genre.

DAY 6 - "HAPPY"

DAY6 achieved their first-ever Perfect All-Kill with the self-produced hit "HAPPY." This was a major milestone, as it is incredibly rare for a band, and specifically a B-side track, to dominate the charts in this way.

HWASA - "GOOD GOODBYE"

Hwasa’s “GOOD GOODBYE” is the self-produced masterpiece that redefined her as a vocal storyteller. The song went viral worldwide and recorded an impressive 750 Perfect All-Kills, making it the second-highest PAK holder after HUNTR/X’s “Golden.”

SEVENTEEN - "Don’t Wanna Cry"

While SEVENTEEN has always been known as the self-producing idol group, “Don’t Wanna Cry” raised them to international stardom. The track blends melancholic EDM with powerful choreography that became one of SEVENTEEN’s most iconic performances.

IU - "Friday"

"Friday" was IU’s first self-composed title track. It achieved the coveted "Perfect All-Kill" and changed the industry's perception of IU from a "teen idol with a good voice" to a formidable musical creator.

As the industry continues to evolve, idol-produced songs are increasingly shaping the future of K-pop, demonstrating that the voices behind the microphone are also powerful forces behind the music itself.
