Cha Eun Woo faces industry fallout 368 days before military discharge amid massive tax evasion allegations

Cha Eun Woo, a member of ASTRO and an actor, is facing mounting fallout in the entertainment industry after becoming embroiled in allegations involving large scale tax evasion totaling approximately 20 billion KRW (about 13.83 million USD). With 368 days remaining until his scheduled military discharge, the controversy has placed his career in serious jeopardy.

The allegations have sent shockwaves through the Korean entertainment industry due to their unprecedented scale. By comparison, actress Song Hye Kyo publicly apologized in 2012 over a tax issue involving roughly 2.5 billion KRW (about 1.73 million USD). In Cha Eun Woo’s case, the amount reportedly under review is nearly eight times larger, amplifying public scrutiny.

According to industry sources on January 22, the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Division 4 conducted an intensive tax audit in the first half of last year targeting Cha Eun Woo and his agency, Fantagio. Tax authorities reportedly concluded that a corporation established under the name of Cha Eun Woo’s mother lacked substantive business operations and was assessed as a paper company.

Authorities are said to be examining whether high-value income, such as advertising model fees and appearance payments, that should have been attributed directly to Cha Eun Woo were instead distributed through allegedly fictitious service contracts between the corporation and Fantagio. This structure reportedly allowed the income to be taxed at a lower corporate tax rate rather than the personal income tax rate, which can reach up to 45 percent. Based on this assessment, the National Tax Service reportedly notified Cha Eun Woo of an additional tax payment totaling 20 billion KRW (about 13.83 million USD), which would mark the largest tax assessment ever issued to a Korean celebrity. The matter has not yet been finalized.

As the controversy spread, Fantagio released an official statement stating that the core issue centers on whether the corporation established by Cha Eun Woo’s mother qualifies as a substantive taxation subject. The agency emphasized that the case has not been conclusively determined or officially confirmed and said it will actively present explanations through lawful procedures regarding interpretations and applications of tax law. Fantagio added that the artist and his tax representatives will cooperate fully to ensure the process is concluded as swiftly as possible.

Despite the agency’s explanation, industry reaction has been immediate. The advertising sector was among the first to respond, with several major brands reportedly distancing themselves. Companies that had previously featured Cha Eun Woo as a main model, including Shinhan Bank, have reportedly switched related advertisements to private or removed them from official social media accounts and YouTube channels, effectively erasing his presence from ongoing campaigns.

Cha Eun Woo enlisted as an active duty soldier in July last year and is currently serving in the Army band. His scheduled discharge date is January 27, 2027, which is 368 days from now. The timing of the allegations has proven particularly damaging, as they emerged during his military service, a period when public explanation and career management are severely limited. Long known for his clean and exemplary public image, the controversy has dealt a significant blow to his reputation. Some online commentators have even raised speculation that his enlistment may have been influenced by awareness of the tax investigation, leading to claims of so-called avoidance enlistment. No evidence has been presented to substantiate these claims.

With investigations ongoing and no final ruling issued, the situation continues to develop. However, the swift response from advertisers and industry stakeholders suggests that the controversy may have lasting consequences for Cha Eun Woo’s career regardless of the eventual legal outcome.
