Police launch investigation into 'Burning Sun' reporter molka katalks and netizens react

Police have launched an investigation into the "Yadongbang ("Literary Room")."

According to the Cyber Investigation Team of the Seoul Metropolitan Agency on Wednesday, the civic group DSO filed a complaint with the police about the anonymous participants of the katalk chatrooms consisting of reporters and producers, on charges of violating the 'Information and Communication Network Act.'

The katalk chatroom is said to have been used to share various obscene materials, including illegal hidden camera films (molka) at club 'Burning Sun.' In addition, "girashi" containing personal information of victims of sexual violence and sex trafficking were also shared.

An official from DSO revealed via their official Twitter account, "We filed a complaint with the police about the journalist katalks. The chatroom became a problem when a group of journalists created an open katalk room to share coverage information. The problematic 'Yadongbang', also referred to as the "Literary Room" had about 200 journalist participants."

A police official revealed, "We will launch an investigation according to the standard procedures. We can't disclose specific details."

  1. 1. [+932, -12] Now that it's an issue, it's time for you. Is this the investigation? Don't dig like you're doing a quick lather and investigate the back line properly. And Naver too, why aren't you investigating them..
  2. 2. [+527, -11] No more taking it easy. So no more charges? Females are funny, is drug rape a joke?? Naver, how many times have we said investigate YG?? Why do you keep hiding the tax evasion, you know, the drug rape investigation...
  3. 3. [+303, -23] Journalist?? Are you crazy? Why aren't you investigating YG and Naver?? What about the drugs, tax evasion or the other misc things? Seungri? Naver? When are you going to do your job? When will you investigate properly?
  4. 4. [+269, -41] Women are protesting on the streets to destroy rape cartels and men are begging in the corner of the room. Punish all the guys who distribute the video, punish all the guys involved with Seungri, punish all of Burning Sun, YG, police chief Yoon, and all the VVIP! What are you doing!!
  5. 5. [+148, -10] Drug rape snuff films in a rotten government with no intention of ever reporting it or solving it...
  6. 6. [+27, -3] This is why men shouldn't have jobs. They just have you clean the house and they make all the money. How long has Burning Sun been going on? YG, police chief Yoon, Joon Young, Seungri, VVIP, all under investigation.
  7. 7. [+23, -0] Why don't you look into the relationship between the government and the police? Why is the reporter molka an issue. Trying to make the women victims blood boil?
  8. 8. [+22, -0] Everything about all this is so frustrating because it's all cloudy. Companies that lead to the drug rape cartels, police, politicians. I'm curious what's the real truth. Let's reveal it all.
  9. 9. [+15, -0] Who is eligible to investigate? There is no one independent of the investigation so of course nothing is being done correctly...
  10. 10. [+11, -0] Burning Sun is not the main problem. It's the combination of the nightlife and the the police collusion. But all the articles and the media are focused on other personal deviations of the entertainers. Don't blur the real issue!!
  11. 11. [+9, -1] I know Yoon is the tail too...
  12. 12. [+8, -2] Reveal everything about the Moon regime and YG's coalescence
  13. 13. [+5, -0] By the way, what about Yoon?
  14. 14. [+5, 0] This is not the real problem. What about the women that bled out???
  15. 15. [+4, -1] YG. I love Naver's teamwork ㅋ ㅋ
  16. 16. [+2, -0] And Yang Hyun Suk... when are you going to investigate the top line?

In any western nation this would be an absolute outrage to the point where it would be headline news every day until there was a conclusion. Meanwhile Korea fails to display a response that suggests punishing men who violate women is any sort of priority. The citizens are angry and they should be but police and court officials are treating all of this as more of an inconvenience than the most egregious violation of human rights it is.

This isn't a "it happens everywhere" issue. This is a Korean issue and it's a Korean issue because Koreans don't value the rights of women on a level even close to how they value the rights of men.

Just rather proves all the coverage was really just about exposing celebrities not about seeking any kind of justice for the young women. I've been telling Kpop fans for years that all the conservative piety that South Koreans display in public is just for show. It's fake and deeply patriarchal. Women in South Korea need all the support they can get in their movement for equality and justice. Women all over the world and even in so called liberated western societies have to constantly fight for justice.
