HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 2

Now that we have all the characters established, this is where the fun begins, right?

Yoon Ha and Ji Yi walk home after their shift while Ji Yi goes poetic about how beautiful and smart and rich her chaebol crush is. The next day, Chang Soo catches Ji Yi lurking in the storage area, trying to catch a glimpse of Joon Ki. He teases her and she is rude to him as he has introduced himself as a friend of Joon Ki's not as the owner of the store. Chang Soo is called away by Yoon Ha's brother, Kyung Joon, who decks him for his mistreatment of his sister (remember the date from last episode?). The brother then meets with his noona, Ye Won, and rides her for her mismanagement of Taejin Group.

Turns out that soon after, Taejin Group offices are raided by teams from the prosecutor's office, looking for evidence in a scandal. Later, after a customer tries to attack them at the store, Ji Yi and Yoon Ha end up at the police station. The customer is pressing charges. Joon Ki bails them out as long as they apologize. Yoon Ha refuses and is fired. Ji Yi ends up apologizing and weeping as Joon Ki drops her off. Seeing her walking alone, Chang Soo tries to take her out drinking, and she ends up drunk and sleeping in his car. Yoon Ha tries to help out, assuming the worst about Chang Soo, who has been a perfect gentleman. As he tries to extricate himself from his car, Ji Yi clutches his shirt, ripping it nearly off...

You almost have to feel sorry for Chang Soo. While I thought his behavior toward Yoon Ha reprehensible, it's not like he doesn't pay for it many times over. Ji Yi treats him like dirt, and then later, he ends up being her unwitting caretaker after she gets herself plastered. He tries to have to some fun with her, but she ends up lecturing him about being a spoiled chaebol when he complains about the seating in a tent restaurant. Then she ends up tearing off what is likely an expensive shirt. At least she didn't throw up in his car...


...and that's when the Well-Dressed Moving Company� came in and got to work.

I'm going to be a little upset if this drama turns out to be predictable. We've got a love interest that will likely develop between Yoon Ha and Joon Ki. Yoon Ha's love will melt Joon Ki's heart, and wedding bells will sound. First, they'll drop hints. Then, they'll put something in the characters' way. Finally, they'll move them back together. I'm hoping there's more to this show than that, but there's not even a hint of a romance, so take that for what it's worth.

One thing I can say is that the crew knows their stuff. Usually the cinematography is spot on, increasing the dramatic tension in the right places.


"Now if we gather it all up, we can pull it into a ponytail..."

And I think that may be one of the show's flaws. I don't really get the sense of a cliffhanger between episodes. There's none of the edge-of-your-seat, hero's-about-to-be-eaten-by-an-alligator type of thing. It largely seems like it's going nowhere fast. At least make me clamor for the next episode, maybe saying things like "Can't wait for next week." But I can wait, and that's not a good thing.

But it's got me curious. I'm sure if a romance develops between Joon Ki and Yoon Ha that Ji Yi will be jealous. The difference will be in what she does with that jealousy. Does she become a bitch and completely work to ruin Yoon Ha's life or does she quietly bear this and become bitter and caustic. Maybe she'll cry. A lot. She seems to do that this episode.


Because you can never have too much fan service.

So, for better or for worse, I'm going to keep watching. I'm hoping it gets better. It's not bad, but it's not amazingly good, either.� �
