For the past 20 days during the SBS "Open Hall" supermodel contest, many beautiful Korean women have been competing for the chance to become a supermodel. Choi Han Bit, a Korean transgender, has advanced to the finals of this competition. A spot in the finals is an almost guaranteed ticket to becoming a supermodel, regardless of the outcome of the contest. Korean news sites such as Naver and Donga have already proclaimed him her as the first domestic transgender supermodel.
She had lots of people to thank and things to say during her speech, especially her parents.
"Looking back, the situation I'm in would have seemed impossible to me as a child. I'm just so happy to be here right now and I want to become a dignified supermodel as well as a great role model. I would like to thank my parents for actively supporting me through the surgery and the pursuit of my dreams."
When asked if she would like to be a celebrity, she said that she did not want to use her transgender status to become a celebrity, but would rather become a celebrity through her hard work and passion.
Concluding her speech she said, "I would like to send a message to any other transgenders. Be dignified and proud of who you are."
To me, she seems to have the right stuff. A humble attitude and genuine sincerity are always good attributes in a superstar. I'm sure that whatever ends up happening, she will be one of the more positively viewed celebrities in Korea.
