Just three days after its release, a new Korean drama on Netflix has already taken the top spot domestically, signaling a strong early success.
From the moment it premiered, viewers praised the series, saying it “exceeded expectations,” and now it’s gaining momentum not only in Korea but also on global charts. At the center of its popularity are Jisoo’s transformed acting, her chemistry with Seo In Guk, and a star-studded lineup of special appearances.
The series in question is Netflix’s new release 'Boyfriend On Demand,' which premiered on March 6. The romantic comedy follows webtoon producer Seo Mi Rae, who has grown weary of real-life romance, as she subscribes to a virtual boyfriend through a simulated dating device, rekindling emotions she had long forgotten. Mi Rae navigates a world of unrealistically perfect men, experiencing both excitement and emotional growth.

The early performance has been impressive. According to FlixPatrol, just three days after its release, 'Boyfriend On Demand' ranked fifth globally in the Netflix TV shows category on March 8. It claimed first place in South Korea, Indonesia, and Vietnam and entered the Top 10 in 69 countries. As of March 9, it topped Netflix Korea’s “Today’s Top 10 Series,” ahead of titles like 'The Dinosaurs,' 'Undercover Miss Hong,' 'Shining,' and 'The Art of Sarah.'
A major factor in the series’ rapid rise is the pairing of Jisoo and Seo In Guk. Jisoo plays the down-to-earth webtoon producer Seo Mi Rae, while Seo In Guk portrays her colleague and workplace ace Park Kyung Nam. Though their relationship starts slightly awkward, it gradually develops into a charming romantic comedy dynamic, which critics say carries the story’s emotional tension effectively. Both actors’ roles as leads in a Netflix original series have also drawn attention.

Another standout element is Jisoo’s noticeable growth as an actress. While her past performances received mixed reviews regarding tone and delivery, viewers now describe her acting in 'Boyfriend On Demand' as natural and well-suited to the romantic comedy genre. Comments such as “Jisoo’s acting feels realistic,” “her tone has improved,” and “she fits perfectly in a rom-com” are common, turning an initial concern into a highlight of the show.
Director Kim Jung Sik expressed satisfaction with Jisoo’s performance, noting, “Effort can surpass talent. Jisoo and Mi Rae’s portrayal felt just like real life.” He added, “The story becomes even more engaging toward the end, with twists and evolving character dynamics between Mi Rae and Park Kyung Nam, which viewers will enjoy.”

The series’ buzz is further amplified by its star-studded special appearances. Actors including Seo Kang Joon, Lee Soo Hyuk, Ong Seong Wu, Lee Jae Wook, Lee Hyun Wook, Kim Young Dae, Jay Park, and Lee Sang Yi appear as Mi Rae’s virtual boyfriends, while Kim Sung Cheol plays her ex-boyfriend Se Jun. Each character brings a unique charm, such as Seo Kang Joon as first-love senior Eun Ho and Lee Soo Hyuk as chaebol webtoon hero Si Woo, increasing audience engagement.
International media have also praised the series. Time highlighted that 'Boyfriend On Demand' explores how women’s choices in a demanding, attention-driven society generate emotions and consequences, noting it as Jisoo’s most fitting role to date and a showcase of female-centered romance.

Viewers have responded enthusiastically, posting comments like: “Scream every time Seo Kang Joon appears,” “Jisoo’s acting is stable and perfectly fits the character,” “Jisoo carries the first half,” and “You can see her growth as an actress.”
With 'Boyfriend On Demand' topping domestic charts just three days after release, all eyes are on how far its momentum will carry. The 10-episode series is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
