During their comeback showcase held on October 4 for their 5th full album '1 of 1', SHINee opened up about the reservations they had regarding their 90s' retro concept.

Their title track "1 of 1" is actually a New Jack Swing genre, mixing the old, 90s' Rhythm and Blues with a more modern, hip-hop sound. To accompany the sound of their new song, SHINee took on a 90s' retro vibe for their MV as well as their comeback fashion.

On the topic, Jonghyun began by opening up with, "We utilized retro fashion and backgrounds profusely. It could be seen as a risky introduction to retro. At first, we worried whether it would come out chic or not, but because the title track is retro, we went with the retro vibe all around. We will take on retro the SHINee way. However, there's a natural feel to it, so middle school and high school students these days might wonder what it is. But because it's a different image, it'll be more noticeable."

Key added on, "We planned the choreography as an easy one that you can watch comfortably. We simplified the rhythm and enlarged our movements. But there's still a lot of movement, so it's no change from SHINee's usual, busy choreography."

Do you think SHINee managed to pull of the 90s' retro?

Wonder Girls are the queens of retro and I'm happy to see SHINee doing there take on the retro concept. The dance, outfit is on point. And the song/album is amazing. But the mv tho looks hella cheap.

Well considering this concept is entirely an Asian reboot of everything groups in the 90s did in assuming one of SMS black creatiors pushed and composed this. Its not bad just not creative imo I still bought this shit tho...both versions ...

This is a vaporwave concept, not retro (actually, vaporwave is retro, but that is the real name)

Not specifically vaporwave but more 90's sitcom concept. Vaporwave is pretty flashy, rosé, with neon, and digital things . It's more like that :

Honestly they go trough so many concepts that is hard to re-invent or do something new at this point. Every boygroup does kind the same but in their unique way, because it's diffrent what SHINee do for look 90' retro than may do Winner, Got7 or Beast with the same concept. Anyways I like because they are all so good-looking that is hard to say "this is bad". I wouldn't say that, but I would say that as to me, I don't like it too much. Aside from them awesomes stages, I cannot complain about it, lately I don't like their concepts. The music was always good, I always buy their albums because all songs are worth it but the concepts are my issues. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. But anyways, I can't wait to see them live.
