Controversy over excessive security measures has resurfaced after the idol group Hearts2Hearts was seen at Incheon International Airport surrounded by bodyguards forming a massive circle, reminiscent of the traditional Korean “Ganggangsullae” dance.
Videos of the group departing on March 18 circulated widely on online communities on March 19. In the footage, security personnel are seen holding hands to form a protective ring around the members as they move toward the airport entrance.
Netizens criticized the scene, saying, “Even the president doesn’t get that level of security,” and, “Blocking public pathways crosses the line.” Others defended the measures, arguing they were “necessary to prevent unexpected incidents caused by overzealous fans.”
The agency had submitted an airport use plan in advance, but critics argue it was insufficient to prevent inconvenience to the public.
Some have called for the introduction of priority departure services, or fast-track lanes, for celebrities. However, airport authorities reportedly stated, “Not all entertainers can be given fast-track access,” and, “It is difficult to set objective criteria, so implementing such a system is not straightforward.”
