The SM Entertainment girl group aespa has always been known for their striking AI-like visuals, captivating stage presence, and trend-setting aesthetics. Ever since their debut, Karina, Winter, Giselle, and Ningning have consistently made headlines for their beauty. But recently, social media has been buzzing with discussions about how different the members look now compared to their debut era, sparking amusement, debates, and a wave of mixed reactions among netizens.
In November 2020, SM Entertainment debuted their highly anticipated fourth-generation girl group aespa with the iconic hit “Black Mamba,” which instantly went viral and marked the arrival of another powerhouse SM girl group. Fast forward to 2025, aespa recently celebrated their 5th debut anniversary, marking half a decade of immense musical success, concept innovations, and visual evolution. And with that milestone came renewed attention to how the members' appearances have changed since their early days.
Across social media platforms, many netizens have expressed shock and amusement at how different the members look now. They are claiming that SM Entertainment has altered the aespa members through plastic surgeries, leading to drastic differences compared to their 2020 appearances. Cosmetic procedures are not new in the K-pop industry. Many idols have undergone surgeries both pre- and post-debut, with some openly acknowledging it. SM Entertainment, in particular, has long held a reputation for refining idol visuals, which fuelled the debate even more.
On the other hand, many defended the aespa members, saying the changes have nothing to do with surgeries. Supportive comments included:
"They just lost their baby fat."
"Aespa look exactly the same since debut. The only thing that changed was the stylist, diets, and facial care."
"There is a thing called aging and it makes your face look a bit different."
"For me, it’s more about the makeup and hair."
"They still look the same, just older, and even if they did, what’s so wrong about it."
While aespa continues to face criticism for their changing visuals, their fans remain supportive, reminding that idols are humans who grow, change, and age like anyone else. Appearance debates aside, aespa remains one of the most influential and visually impactful girl groups of the fourth generation.
