Netflix’s animated film 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' is officially getting a sequel.
On November 5, Bloomberg reported that Netflix and Sony Pictures have finalized a production agreement for the follow-up to 'K-Pop Demon Hunters.' The sequel is aimed for a 2029 release, though the schedule could shift depending on production timelines.
Before the full-length sequel, a short film may be released. A source who requested anonymity told Bloomberg, “Netflix is exploring programs to meet fans’ expectations,” adding that a short film is a possibility.
'K-Pop Demon Hunters' is an action-fantasy animation following K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Joy as they secretly protect the world behind their dazzling performances. The film became the first Netflix content ever to surpass 300 million cumulative views, ranking first across all films and series. The soundtrack, including the hit “Golden” performed by the in-film K-pop group HUNTR\X, topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks.
Director Maggie Kang hinted at the sequel’s potential during a BBC interview last month, saying, “I believe there are still many stories to tell with these characters.” At a domestic press conference in August, she added that she wanted to showcase a variety of music styles with the sequel, including trot, heavy metal, and pansori, reflecting diverse Korean musical genres.
