Trot singer Jung Dong Won, known for his performances on music stages and variety shows, is currently under investigation by prosecutors for alleged unlicensed driving, according to MBN reports.
The Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office confirmed that Jung is being investigated on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act. He is accused of driving a vehicle without a license in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, in 2023, when he was 16 years old.
Earlier this year, Jung was reportedly targeted by three blackmailers who had obtained his mobile phone. They attempted to use a video stored on the phone, which showed Jung driving a truck in Hadong at the time, as evidence of his unlicensed driving, and demanded over 200 million KRW (approx. $145,000) to keep it private. Jung refused to pay. Instead, he immediately acknowledged his mistake and, prepared to face legal consequences, reported the blackmailers to the police. The culprits are currently in custody and facing trial.
Jung’s legal representative told MBN that the singer had driven "out of curiosity only once," but acknowledged his wrongdoing and stated that Jung had cooperated fully with investigators.
This is not the first time Jung has faced such an allegation. On March 23, 2023, he was caught by police for riding a motorcycle on the Dongbu Expressway in Seoul, a road designated for automobiles only. At the time, prosecutors decided not to indict him, citing his minor status and the fact that it was his first offense.
