The film 'No Other Choice' (directed by Park Chan Wook) has broken the box office dominance of 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.'
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system, as of 4 PM on September 8, 'No Other Choice' ranked first in ticket reservations with 29.7%. A total of 110,787 advance tickets have been sold.
Despite still being 17 days away from release, the film is showing an unusually strong box office trend. By comparison, '12.12: The Day' and 'The Roundup: Punishment' reached No. 1 in booking only 10 days before release, making this achievement a full week earlier.
The surge has also slowed the momentum of Japanese animation 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle,' with its advance sales dropping sharply with the competition from the new release.
'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' surpassed 1.64 million admissions within just three days of its release on August 22 in South Korea, setting a new record in the Korean box office. According to CGV, on August 27, the film achieved an occupancy rate of over 90% in its 4DX theaters during the opening weekend. This surpasses the previous record set by 'Avatar: The Way of Water' for the fastest-selling opening weekend in premium theaters.
Meanwhile, 'No Other Choice' tells the story of an office worker who, after being suddenly fired, fights his own personal war to find new employment while trying to protect his wife, children, and the home he struggled to secure.
The film was selected to compete at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Though it was widely predicted by critics to win the Golden Lion, the festival’s top prize, it ultimately did not take home the award.
Following Venice, 'No Other Choice' will head to Toronto and New York, and it will open the 30th Busan International Film Festival as the opening film. It is set to be released on September 24.
