Yang Dong Geun, an actor and singer who has previously faced political controversy, has once again drawn public criticism with a series of provocative social media posts. On Aug. 8, he uploaded multiple photos to his personal SNS account with the caption “Self memorial photo.” The images included stills from a variety show appearance, a funeral home sign, and a Bible verse.
The post came shortly after he shared another video of himself attending an event on July 30 — the youth camp hosted by Pastor Son Hyun Bo of Busan Saegero Church. Pastor Son is a hardline conservative figure known for defending former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s December 3 martial law declaration and promoting allegations of election fraud. He also led anti-impeachment rallies in front of the National Assembly during Yoon’s impeachment proceedings.
Yang’s attendance at the camp, alongside a caption quoting Psalm 51:7 — “Wash it whiter than snow” — sparked backlash online. In response, his agency Jo Entertainment stated, “Yang Dong Geun participated in the Christian event out of pure faith. He has no personal connection to Pastor Son and did not express any political stance.”
However, soon after the agency’s explanation, Yang further fueled the controversy by posting a photo of himself with an expletive written on his forehead, accompanied by the message: “I’m the fool for believing in you. Feel free to be disappointed and curse at me. You have that freedom. It’s not like I’m going to kill myself, right?”
The comments have drawn criticism for their tone and perceived insensitivity, adding to the public debate around his recent actions. Yang is currently preparing for the release of the film ‘The Starlight Falls’ and the Disney+ series ‘Fragment City’.
