The U.S. drama series 'Butterfly' is drawing much attention for featuring multiple top Korean actors.
The spy thriller, originally set to release on Prime Video, will also now air on tvN. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the series follows former U.S. intelligence officer David Jung (played by Daniel Dae Kim) and active agent Rebecca (played by Reyna Hardesty), who is sent to eliminate him, in a tense cat-and-mouse chase.
On August 5, tvN revealed the official poster for 'Butterfly' on its official social media account, featuring Daniel Dae Kim and Reyna Hardesty as rival agents. The poster design also incorporated the Korean word for "butterfly," as seen in the original promotional material. Prime Video described 'Butterfly' as a unique spy thriller series that blends a global espionage narrative with Korea's distinctive sense of familial warmth.

The project has deep ties to Korea. Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim not only stars in the series but also produces the drama. On the other hand, co-producer and showrunner Steph Cha, also Korean-American, is an award-winning author in the LA Times Mystery/Thriller category. Daniel Dae Kim shared that 'Butterfly' brings to life his long-held dream to create a show that bridges two cultures that he loves together.
Given that much of the story is set in Korea, filming was carried out extensively in the country from February to June last year. The drama features iconic locations such as the Han River, Cheonggyecheon, Jongno, and Yeouido in Seoul, as well as Busan and Andong. The Seoul Metropolitan Government reportedly provided active support for the filming after Daniel Dae Kim was appointed as an honorary citizen of Seoul.

Moreover, the series is gaining much traction with news of a star-studded Korean cast. Big-name actors include Kim Ji Hoon, Park Hae Soo, Kim Tae Hee, Sung Dong Il, and Lee Il Hwa. The trailer gives a sneak peek of the Korean cast's appearances.
Adding to the buzz, BTS member J-Hope’s solo track "What If" was used as the trailer’s background music, sparking enthusiastic reactions from global fans. Reflecting this excitement, the trailer garnered nearly 100,000 views within just 10 hours of release, accompanied by a flood of comments from the worldwide ARMY fandom.
Meanwhile, 'Butterfly' is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on August 13 and tvN on August 22.
