EXO’s Chanyeol makes his solo comeback today (Aug. 25) with his second mini album "Upside Down," marking his return a year after his first solo release.
The album will be available on music platforms at 6 p.m. KST, along with the release of the title track "Upside Down" music video on the SMTOWN YouTube channel. The video, designed around an electric shock concept, features Chanyeol portraying two contrasting personas, blending sharp visuals with surreal animated sequences to depict the sensations of being jolted by electricity.
The mini album includes six songs spanning pop, rock, hip-hop, and R&B, all imbued with Chanyeol’s distinct sensibility. The tracklist features "Back & Forth," "Ocean Drive," "High & Dry," "Happy Accident (Feat. SOLE)," and "123 Dance," with band-driven sounds forming a central theme.
Chanyeol will celebrate the release with a countdown live broadcast on EXO’s YouTube and TikTok channels at 5 p.m. KST today. He will also hold the offline event ‘THE STAGE’ at Musinsa Garage on August 27–28, followed by a solo debut anniversary concert ‘Sound Stage’ at Yes24 Live Hall on August 31, connecting with fans in multiple ways.

The following is Chanyeol’s Q&A:
Q1. How do you feel about making your solo comeback after a year?
After wrapping up promotions for my first solo album "Black Out," I immediately started preparing again. I’m really happy to be back in just a year with "Upside Down." I’m grateful for another opportunity to share my music and I’m looking forward to this promotion a lot.
Q2. Was there anything new you challenged yourself with for this comeback?
Since this album is filled with my voice, I wanted to do better vocally, so I studied different ways of expression. I also tried various approaches to find what suited me best. Thanks to consistent exercise, I was able to return in a state I’m personally satisfied with.
Q3. Out of the six tracks, which one feels closest to the “August 2024 Chanyeol,” aside from the title track?
I’d pick "Ocean Drive." When it’s summer, you naturally think of the sea (laughs). It’s funky and refreshing, and I think it captures my bright and positive energy well.
Q4. How would you describe the title track "Upside Down" in your own words?
When I first heard it, it felt like being electrocuted — thrilling and intense. I really wanted to take on the challenge of performing it. I often listened to it while working out, and it became like an energetic workout buddy.
Q5. Have you recently experienced any "Upside Down" feelings in daily life?
These days, I work out almost every day. Especially during cardio like running, I sometimes want to quit and wonder why I’m doing it. But when I finish the workout I set as my goal, I feel accomplished and think, “I did it again today.” That’s when I feel ‘Upside Down.’
Q6. The album jacket and MV show ON/OFF versions of you. What was filming like, and which version is closer to the real you?
Switching between two extreme concepts wasn’t easy, even starting from makeup. There were times I had to alternate between ON and OFF versions for continuity, and changing looks took a long time. In real life, I’m closer to the OFF version — I spend most of my time at home, so that feels more like me.
Q7. You’re known for your love of pets, and this time you even filmed with a goat. How was that experience?
My dogs Jjal and Toben are doing well (laughs). The goat I filmed with was really cute. At first, I worried it might be scared of me, but it was so gentle and kind that I quickly adapted and had fun filming.
Q8. You planned several offline events for this comeback. How did that idea come about?
During last year’s ‘City Scenery’ tour, I met audiences around the world, and the memories stayed with me deeply. I was happy interacting with fans, so this time I wanted to try different versions of performances. I hope these events become opportunities to connect more closely with EXO-L through music.
Q9. Your YouTube channel ‘Channel Chanyeol’ is receiving a lot of attention. Any memorable episodes or future plans?
Learning crump dance was unforgettable — it reminded me of filming ‘Infinite Challenge’ years ago. I realized how dance can relieve stress. In the future, I’d like to try playing different instruments, learn new sports, or create content introducing Korean traditions.
Q10. How do you feel about promoting alongside EXO members’ activities, and what was their reaction to your album?
Lately I’ve been spending more time with Suho and Kai, which makes me happy. I let the members hear the title track early, and they loved it. They also gave me a lot of honest feedback (laughs).
Q11. A message to EXO-L.
Thanks to all of you, I could return with a new album after just one year. Your constant support and encouragement give me strength. I made this album with joy while thinking of you, and I hope we create many happy memories through these promotions. I want to keep sharing good music and good moments with you. I love you.
