The South Korean Supreme Court has finalized a sentence of 6-months in prison, deferred by a probationary period of 1-year, for YG Entertainment's executive producer Yang Hyun Suk, who was previously put on trial for threatening an informant 'A' over rapper B.I's illegal drug use case.
'A', who was previously under investigation for illegal drug use around 2016, gave B.I's name to the police as a suspected buyer of illegal drugs. Yang Hyun Suk then threatened 'A' into taking back their statement, covering up B.I's drug use scandal for some time before the investigation was later reopened.
Initially, the district court ruled Yang Hyun Suk not guilty of retaliatory threatening. However, following an appeal by the prosecution, the second trial found that Yang Hyun Suk had in fact exercised several forms of threatening against 'A'. During the second trial, the district court concluded, "Yang Hyun Suk used his status as the executive producer of a major entertainment company to demand that 'A' overturn their statement. As a result, a criminal investigation was halted for some time. Therefore, it may be said that the defendant's actions significantly hampered the function of the law."
Now, as of July 18 KST, the Supreme Court has decided to uphold the ruling made by the second district court, including a probationary sentence of 1-year.
Shortly after acknowledging the Supreme Court's decision, Yang Hyun Suk relayed through his label YG Entertainment, "Although I am disappointed with the court's ruling, I will nonetheless accept the decision with humility. From now on, I will focus on my duties with greater caution and responsibility."
