Actress Lee Si Young announces pregnancy with embryo from ex-husband following divorce.
On July 8th KST, actress Lee Si Young revealed via Instagram that she is currently pregnant—with a child conceived using a frozen embryo created with her ex-husband five years ago. The decision to undergo the procedure was made independently, without the ex-husband’s consent.
Lee and her ex-husband, a businessman identified as “A,” underwent artificial fertilization during their marriage and had embryos cryopreserved, initially planning for a second child. However, the couple divorced due to irreconcilable differences before pursuing that plan.
In a statement, A explained that they had maintained regular communication post-divorce for the sake of their first son. As the expiration date for the frozen embryos approached, Lee decided to proceed with implantation. “She made the decision to become pregnant, even though I did not agree with it,” A said. “But now that there will be a second child, I will do my best to fulfill my responsibilities as a father.”
He added, “Since we’ve already been co-parenting our first child, we will continue to communicate and cooperate for the birth and upbringing of the second.”
Lee explained her decision on Instagram, writing: “As my relationship with my former partner was coming to an end, I was also faced with the expiration date of our five-year embryo storage. I couldn’t bring myself to discard it, and so I made the decision alone.” She added, “Although the other party did not consent, I’m prepared to bear the full weight of my choice.”
She continued, “There may be many difficulties and uncertainties ahead, but even so, I want to believe that this was a meaningful and worthwhile decision.”
Lee Si Young married A in September 2017 and gave birth to their first son, Jung Yoon. The couple filed for divorce earlier this year and officially announced their separation in March through the Seoul Family Court.
