Industry professionals in the drama sector have come together to explore ways to ensure the sustainability of the Korean drama industry.
On May 19, the Korea Drama Production Association held a roundtable titled "Discussion on Improving the K-Drama Industry System and Policy Proposals" at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building. The meeting focused on discussing practical policy alternatives to overcome the current crisis.
This roundtable was jointly hosted by the K-Cultural Powerhouse Committee of the "Real Republic of Korea" Election Committee, the Jalsanism Culture and Arts Committee, and the Korea Drama Production Association. Drama production company representatives also attended to share firsthand insights from the field.
Representative Lee Ki Heon emphasized the need for "institutional intervention at the government level and a grand compromise for mutual prosperity among industry stakeholders," expressing his commitment to pursuing concrete legislation, including a special law for the drama industry.

Representative Kim Jun Hyuk highlighted the social and cultural value of Korean dramas. He stated, “I will work to provide policy support to protect our drama industry in the face of a global capital-driven production environment.”
In addition, the discussion covered multiple crisis factors faced by production companies and broadcasters, such as reduced broadcasting slots, deteriorating revenue structures, rising talent fees, and advertising regulations. Particular attention was given to structural risks caused by scheduling uncertainty, distribution delays, and difficulties in recouping investments.
The Korea Drama Production Association systematically presented policy tasks centered on these issues. Attendees also voiced opinions on institutional reforms and the roles of the National Assembly and government through open discussions.
Co-chairman Lee Woo Jong stressed the need for the government to send a clear policy signal in response to industry polarization and the influence of global OTT capital. He said, “We will push for practical institutional reforms using administrative and legislative authority.”
Association president Song Byung Joon added, “Bold policy intervention beyond conventional resources is needed,” emphasizing that “now is the time for a structural turning point in the K-drama industry.”
