A few months after concluding activities with SISTAR in 2017, SOYOU launched her solo career with several musical projects, officially debuting in December of that year with the mini-album ‘RE:BORN.’
Over the years, SOYOU has made a name for herself in the industry by participating in drama original soundtracks (OSTs), including hits like “Some (feat. Lil Boi),” “I Miss You,” and her most recent track, “Love used to be.”
“PDA” is SOYOU's latest solo comeback track, and she hopes it will reach even more people.
The singer is currently part of the ongoing ‘KOSTCON’ tour, which brings together Korean singers known for their OSTs. SOYOU and the other featured performers recently completed shows in Jakarta and Manila.
Check out allkpop’s exclusive interview with SOYOU below!
allkpop: You released “PDA” earlier this year. How would you describe your first half of 2025, and what are you expecting to do or try for the rest of the year?
SOYOU: First of all, it took me some time and some hardships to prepare for the song “PDA” during the first half of the year. This is most of the time that I actually spent preparing for “PDA.” I also just joined a new company in March. I was preparing one song but had to come up with a new one, so in a very short period of time, it took a lot of hard work to prepare in time. I want to complete and finish “PDA” in good shape.
allkpop: You’ve been in the industry for more than a decade. How would you describe your growth as an artist since then, particularly in discovering your unique artistic color and tones?
SOYOU: There's no right answer when it comes to music. Through whatever journey I'm on, I'm trying to find the color that suits me best. At the same time, I'm so glad to be finding so many different colors within me.
allkpop: What has been the most memorable experience or favorite moment of your career thus far?
SOYOU: When I first released the song “Some,” I hit No. 1 on the Korean charts. That moment is the most memorable for me because it was my goal since I was in SISTAR. It was a complete transition for me after I achieved what I hadn't before. So many things changed after that, including my expressions, the way I talk, my attitude—everything. I think that was a very motivating moment for me, and the experiences I went through made me who I am today.
allkpop: Do you have any singing warm-up or technique?
SOYOU: I don't have a specific routine. On stage, I focus only on my song and my voice, and that's when I hear the crowd cheering.
allkpop: If you could leave an impression or something in the industry, what would it be, and why?
SOYOU: I want to keep my originality as SOYOU. How I express myself to my fans might not be the “right” answer, but it's important to be myself and approach them as who I am. This is because some fans prefer me to do dance music, while others want me to do ballad love songs.
allkpop: Lastly, could you share with us your short- and long-term goals as an artist?
SOYOU: I don't really have a long-term plan because we never know what is going to happen in the future. Instead, I do consider quite a lot of short-term goals. I'm starting a new challenge to perform and deliver the right vibe for “PDA,” which is why I'm preparing to participate in the ‘Waterbomb’ festival. My most important short-term goal is to reach as many people as possible with “PDA.” I think this is a great opportunity to be on the same stage as other wonderful and talented artists, and I hope to reach a wider audience through ‘KOSTCON’ and future performances. In the future, the fans out there who would like to see me, I want to perform “PDA” for them.
