BTS's RM shares his thoughts on the 'K-label' and says the biggest misconception about K-pop is that it's prefabricated

BTS leader RM is promoting his first solo album in Spain while visiting various renowned museums in the country. It is also known that RM went to Spain to find inspiration for his second album.

Recently, RM spoke about his thoughts on the 'K-label,' and responded to a question about K-pop misconceptions.

In an interview with El País, RM shared the deep ideologies of music that he holds and his thoughts on the K-pop industry, which is known to be the "factory" of young idol artists.

The K-pop industry has been known to be the most competitive field with extremely slim chances of making it to success, more so than other music industries. This is because various Korean entertainment companies have established a specific formula for producing these K-pop idols who will later be adored and worshipped by fandoms around the world.

During the interview, RM was asked, "The track starts with 'Fuck the trendsetter/ I'm going back to when I was when I was 9/ When I was more human.' Do you think the extreme success of K-pop has dehumanized artists?"  RM responded, "When you become a trainee, you start building experience as an idol member when you're young. You don't have a lot of personal time but that's what makes K-pop shine because many young people put forth the same hard work together; they create an energy that only people in their 20s can have. They stay up day and night and work hard to complete the dance, video, and music. All these things work together to create a big bang (synergy)."

While responding to the question and sharing his thoughts, RM lost track of the question asked. So El País asked again, "Do you think the system of creating an idol band is inhumane?" to which he responded, "My company doesn't like the way I respond to this question. It's because I agree to a certain extent but the reporters begin writing 'This is a horrible system, it destroys the youth!' However, (the system) creates a special industry. Also, when it comes to contracts, payment, and education have improved. There are teachers and psychologists (who help idols)."

When asked if he's sick of the "K" label? RM responded, "Although you can be annoyed by Spotify categorizing all of us as K-pop, it is an exclusive/premium label. It ensures the same high standards of quality that our grandparents fought for." When asked about the biggest misconception/prejudice about K-pop, RM replied, "That it's prefabricated."

The BTS member also talked about his love for art. He explained he does not collect to invest, but he wants to introduce his collection one day by opening a private exhibition in the near future.

Read the entire interview if you haven’t already, it was very insightful. I respect Namjoon so much. He’s incredibly wise, honest, thoughtful, and articulate. It’s really no surprise he was able to lead his group to greatness.
