Singers that debuted as "Faceless Singers" in the 1990s & Early 2000s

Have you ever heard of a "faceless singer?" It was a common term used in the 1990s and early 2000s in the k-pop industry, and it means literally what is said - a singer without a face. The artist would debut without showing their face, and that was the pure concept of the singer. It left a mystery to the public, and it was often portrayed in singers that wanted to be acknowledged solely for their vocal skills.

Though it's less common nowadays, faceless singers were pretty common in the 90s and early 2000s, and some of them obviously ended up showing their faces later on. Today -- we'll be taking a look at some artists who started off their careers as faceless singers. You'll be surprised to see some of the people on this list, so make sure to let us know what your thoughts are!

Kim Bum Soo

Our favorite ballad singer Kim Bum Soo debuted in 1999 as a faceless singer. His music video boasted an incredible lineup with actors Song Seung Hun, Song Hye Kwo, and Ji Jin Hee, and his song and music video received quite some attention from the public. Many fans adore his vocal skills, which made him receive attention -- of course, later on, he ended up revealing his face to the public.

WAX

WAX might be the craziest of them all because not only did she debut as a faceless singer, but she also had a performer performing in her place. And it's someone you know. Yes, Ha Jiwon debuted as the "performer" for WAX. Many people thought she was Wax until she finally revealed her face to the public!

Jo Sung Mo

Contrary to his handsome looks, Jo Sungmo debuted in 1998 with his first album as a solo artist, but his face was never revealed at the time of his debut. He made his first appearance on Lee Sora's Propose, and everyone went absolutely nuts at his good looks!

Brown Eyes

Brown Eyes debuted without showing their face as well, and they were selling nearly 30,000 copies of albums per day, so the agency decided to hold off a bit more before finally revealing their face.

SG Wannabe

Power vocal trio SG Wannabe also debuted as faceless singers. There are some rumors that they were encouraged to go through plastic surgery before debuting, but they denied it, ultimately causing them to debut as faceless singers. Two decades later -- we're so happy to see them ultimately being able to proudly show themselves!

KCM

When KCM first debuted, he hid his facial identity to maintain a "mysterious" concept. Even besides his face, the agency didn't reveal anything about him besides his age.

Brown Eyed Girls

Yes - the four-member idol group you're thinking of debuted as a faceless singer! They were known for their vocal skills and debuted as faceless singers. Of course, they shifted paths to more of an "idol-style" group which ultimately led them to reveal their faces!

Big Mama

Power vocal quartet Big Mama debuted under YG Entertainment as faceless singers as well. For the past two decades, these ladies have been serenading us with great music, but they first began their paths as singers with unrevealed faces.

It is definitely a shock to see some of the artists here on this list. It's even more surprising that it was almost a "culture" for artists to debut without their faces revealed. Whatever the reasons may have been, we're so glad we are able to see all of these artists today without them having to "hide" their identities.

We were not a fraud, we were performers for a faceless singer. If only the rest of the world would understand as Korea does.
