On a recent episode of JTBC's 'Take Care of My Refrigerator,' BoA and SHINee's Key basked in the memories of their foregone trainee days.

Both singers lightheartedly expressed discontent over their past stringent diet restrictions which prohibited the two from eating any food that they so desired.

When MC Kim Sung Joo asked Key whether there were any instances during his trainee days that made him dejected because he wasn't allowed to eat certain foods, the Key answered, "My body is actually not naturally slim. I'm the type to immediately gain weight. So the company allowed members who are naturally slim like Taemin and Jonghyun to eat whatever they want. While they would order things like Chicken  Katsu and Tonkatsu, Onew and I ate things like fish cakes and dwenjang jiigae [soybean stew]. I really really wanted to eat that Chicken Katsu and Tonkatsu."

BoA related all too well to Key's story and told everyone on the show about a past company outing for trainees where only she wasn't allowed to eat. She told the MC panel, "All the trainees were taken out to a restaurant to be treated one time and while all the other trainees like Jang Na Ra and Fly to the Sky were ordering stuff like rib eye and fried rice, I was told 'Don't eat.' At a young age, I was hurt by such a comment.

Fortunately, the singer's sad story had a happy ending as she told everyone, "After debut, when I was making a lot of money with 'No. 1,' I went back to the restaurant and ate four plates of food all by myself," making the studio ring with laughter at her cute rebellious act.

That's the price of being a celebrity... It's a difficult life at the beginning but it gets better after some years ;

megaveli Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Hahaha aww..poor boa..and Ima huge fan of her so I'm not hating but she looks weird in this it her make-up?

barcode Wednesday, July 29, 2015

I feel like a lot of Asian parents esp Korean parents are really strict on their children's diet. Like, when I was in middle school (around 11-12 yo) my friends' parents and mine actually restrict our food. I was the type to gain weight easily and was really fat then so I could only eat around 2-3 tablespoon of rice with a little meat and few korean banchan for lunch and stopped eating at 7pm. I mean it wasn't as harsh as it sounds and my friends and I are actually grateful to our parents now. Even my mom still eats around 2-3 tablespoon of rice for each meal to keep her body slim. ;

The only incident where I was really really jealous of one of my friend's sister was when her mom allowed her to eat a really fattening plate of spaghetti with cheeses and stuffs while we only got like...rice...and bean paste soup and we had to eat in the same table at the same time. lol. ;

Lugoose Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Aww, but is your body used to that now and you eat a lot without gaining weight? I was a HUGE baby when I was born, but it naturally just vanished as I grew up, and now I'm super underweight lol. But that's purely because of genetics I think..

orangethecarrot Wednesday, July 29, 2015

but your story seems better than most scenarios; where your parents do nothing & children ending up overweight, fat, uncomfortable, unhealthy, unable to do sports, physically limited, bullied, unattractive.

barcode Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@Lugoose I wish! but no. :( I don't even think that's possible. I still have to watch what I eat or I'll just gain it all over again. When I first started to live alone I gained more than 20 lbs and have started to loose it all out again. I wish I could have your genetics! being underweight is so much better b/c I love to eat so much that I'm pretty much a self-acclaimed foodie lmao.

barcode Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@orangethecarrot Yup, So I'm grateful to my parents now although my mom's constant nagging and my mom's friends constant comment on my weight and my huge appetite did get me to become less confident and more conscious about my body. But yes, it is actually better, but most people here just don't agree with it. If BoA or Key debuted as "fat" idols they would have received even more backlash and hate for it (ex Kangin and Shindong), so eventually the managements are doing the right thing.

kitteauaena Wednesday, July 29, 2015

BoA was only, what, 11-12 when she was a trainee? Telling a CHILD they cant eat is the most stupid thing you can ever do

kitteauaena Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Especially since at such an age they need all the nutrition they can get

shiroichanuk Wednesday, July 29, 2015

In the same interview BoA also revealed that at one point she was told she was "too fat." This was around the time she was promoting Atlantis Princess during which she wore tops that exposed her belly which resulted in netizens posting floods of comments demanding that she loose weight. She was 15 or 16 at the time so obviously she would've still had some baby fat left but even so her management told her to loose weight. She was only allowed to eat salads for a long time. After that her management went and told her she was "too thin" and demanded that she put on weight. BoA stated that after this horrible experience she doesn't eat much salad anymore. I don't blame to be honest, every child should have a balanced meal.

kitteauaena Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@shiroichanuk I remember when she promoted Atlantis Princess--I became a fan of her around that time. I thought she had an amazing body back then, even if she had some baby fat left. But then again, netizens like to attack anything >.<;

shiroichanuk Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@kitteauaena Even though I didn't become a fan until after she finished promoting Made In Twenty (20) I don't have a problem with the way she looked back in her early years. Some netizens are horrible just for the sake of it.

poke Wednesday, July 29, 2015

She has blamed her small stature on being forced to train/diet in the past. Even if not true, it's sad that she has to carry that thought around with her.

shiroichanuk Thursday, July 30, 2015

@poke It is very possible to stunt your growth if you don't get the proper nutrition at certain ages. We still don't know if this is true to BoA's case but it could be.

xricax Wednesday, July 29, 2015

I guess it's not really strict right now. I saw a chinese article and said that Red Velvet revealed that the company doesn't force them to go on diets. They even eat meat in the morning. ;

w_e_n_n_y Wednesday, July 29, 2015

They could be naturally slim and exercise thats why, or they're just lying. Who knows.

mitcat Wednesday, July 29, 2015

People here are hilariously making assumptions... first of their diet for people who aren't naturally slim are co trolled to healthy choices I see no reason why anyone should complain. Meanwhile I am more worried about the people that get to eat crappy unhealthy food. You don't even know if boa was feed healthy food before going out. The problem people that have t bee ;disciplined have with making money is gaining excess unhealthy weight when money starts rolling in. . Discipline is done by every health conscious person.. ;

Remember idols ;in other company are eating cheap noodles. ;

BCSN24 Wednesday, July 29, 2015

The diets are definitely too strict. And I think they look better with meat on their bones.

Haru8 Wednesday, July 29, 2015

hahaha i don't really know about boa before and not that interested with her but after i watched her in three meals a day i think she is cute, kind, cool and funny. SM is so mean though..why took them out for a meal if some of them are not even allowed to eat...shttt..poor her

ivl Wednesday, July 29, 2015

it would be understandable to monitor their diet and limit their what theyre eating to healthy foods but not letting them eat is a bit too much :/

orangethecarrot Wednesday, July 29, 2015

if management told them they can eat veggies, fruits, & healthily cooked protein then key & boa shouldnt be surprised.

people who gain weight easily cant get away with eating foods that skinny people can. if the fried chicken patty & rice are so wonderful, then gain weight, dont ;be in a kpop dance group, dont have a job that relies on being an IDOL & dont be mad when management keeps it real with you. ;dont be mad at management or say they are being "strict" when they're just being real, be mad at your shitty fat genetics & jealous that you dont have skinny genetics. ;

w_e_n_n_y Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Your getting downvotes for this but tell u what, those poeple are just the people who cant open their eyes to the truth, cos ur right on.

_bl4ck Wednesday, July 29, 2015

People are more-so outraged at the fact that management would consider these kids anywhere near fat. Sure they may gain weight but they would still be at a normal weight as opposed to the acceptable stick-thin which is media, and really Asia's perception of thin. BoA at her heaviest during (2002-2003) was nowhere near fat, but SM made her lose the weight because she wasn't stick thin.

kitteauaena Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Do you know how old BoA was when she was a trainee? Only 11-12 years old. She was a KID back then. She was also pretty skinny back then, too, from what I remember from her predebut videos (not sure if they're still up on Youtube, though) and BoA said nothing here about being the type to gain weight easily (only Key said that). And also, BoA said that she was literally told she couldn't eat. She wasn't told that she could only eat certain foods, she was literally told she couldn't eat with the rest of the trainees.

Sweet_Milk_Tea Wednesday, July 29, 2015

please stop talking because you know nothing. BoA was ALREADY skinny, but she wasn't skinny enough for them, so they starved her. Also, kids NEED all the proper nutrition in order to grow. By restricting her diet to only vegetables, they seriously impeded her growth spurt, which is part of the reason why she remained short apart from genetics.

orangethecarrot Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@Sweet_Milk_Tea boa sure likes SM considering they "starved her" if i were "starved" by a management company, i probably would cut ties rather than continue working with them for over 10 years

orangethecarrot Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@_bl4ck boa was not "made" to lose weight - she was told she could not eat unhealthy fried crap food like tonkatsu. there is a huge difference. if boa was forced on a treadmill & told she cannot eat healthy proteins you would actually have a point. the management is right, they need to make sure their employees stay at a weight that allows them to do complicated dances.

orangethecarrot Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@w_e_n_n_y i knew i would get down votes before i posted. there is this recent "being overweight/obese is healthy & acceptable" "eating crappy fried sugary insulin spiking carb is healthy in 'moderation' which is not actually moderation" movement lately & it's just gonna lead to more overweight unhealthy uncomfortable physically limited people, who cant dance, who cant do sports their skinny counterparts can, who think they are eating in moderation when moderation is relative.

kitteauaena Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@orangethecarrot No, if you read the article correctly, it says that KEY and Onew were the ones who couldn't eat tonkatsu! KEY is the one who says that his body isn't naturally slim, that he's the type to gain weight easily. BoA NEVER said anything about tonkatsu!

kitteauaena Wednesday, July 29, 2015

@kitteauaena Also, there was an interview BoA gave a while back where she said that at one point during her Atlantis Princess promotions, her management forced her to eat nothing but salads, just because netizens called her "fat" (I was a fan of her back then, she wasn't even one bit fat at all) and said she should lose weight.

_bl4ck Thursday, July 30, 2015

@orangethecarrot I was referring to post-debut, hence mentioning the years 2002-2003. This specific article when she was told not to eat was pre-debut, before 2000, seperate incidents. During post-debut, she had to lose a certain amount of kgs/lbs, she was directly told "to lose weight". They made her workout and gave her a restricted diet constituting of salads, and green drinks only. She dropped a significant amount of weight during the latter of 2003 when she was only 15-16 y/o.

_bl4ck Thursday, July 30, 2015

@orangethecarrot Also the stuff she was prohibited from eating that the other trainees were happily ordering wasn't necessarily unhealthy, stir-fried kimchi rice and steak. The tonkatsu dish was what Key wanted.
