As of September 13, the Seoul Mapo Police have formally recognized the bravery of an 18-year-old teenager for apprehending a suspected illegal spycam offender on August 17.

The incident occurred on Seoul Metro Line 2 between Sinchon and Hongik University Station. Lee, seated on the train, noticed the man beside him acting suspiciously with his phone. When he looked closer, he saw a video showing a woman in a blue dress climbing stairs, filmed from beneath her skirt.

Convinced he was witnessing illegal activity, Lee seized the man’s phone and reported him to police. The suspect resisted and asked Lee to wait until the next stop, but once they reached Hongik University Station, the man tried to snatch back his phone and flee.

Lee chased the suspect down the station stairs and confronted him. The man claimed the video was of his girlfriend and that she had given consent, but Lee insisted on involving the police and verifying the claim directly.

During the confrontation, the suspect became aggressive, swinging his fist at Lee, who dodged the blows while ensuring the man could not escape. Lee sustained minor scratches on his arm in the struggle. He held onto the phone while calling the police again and eventually restrained the suspect outside Exit 8 of Hongik University Station until officers arrived.

Police confirmed Lee’s account through CCTV footage. On September 11, Seoul Mapo Police presented Lee with a commendation for his courage and quick action.

When asked about the incident, Lee said, “I wasn’t scared. I’ve got guts.” He noted that his interest in boxing and consistent training helped him stay calm under pressure.

The suspect is currently under investigation by Seoul Gwangjin Police for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes related to illegal filming with a camera.
