On July 17, the Criminal Division 2 of the Kimcheon Branch of the Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office announced that four members of Iran’s national track and field team have been indicted and detained on charges of gang rape (aggravated rape) of a Korean woman.
According to the prosecution, the athletes are accused of gang-raping a Korean woman in her 20s on the morning of May 31 at a motel in Gumi while they were in South Korea participating in the Asian Athletics Championships.
Investigations revealed that the motel served as the Iranian national team’s accommodation.
Initially, police had referred three of the athletes - identified as A, B, and C - to prosecutors without detention on charges of raping the victim together, while the fourth, D, was suspected of acting as a lookout and aiding the crime.
However, during the prosecution’s investigation, a thorough review of surveillance (CCTV) footage and reexamination of the victim and other witnesses revealed that the actual perpetrators were A, B, and D, not C. As a result, D was also detained.
A prosecution official stated, “This is a serious crime in which members of the Iranian national team, who entered Korea to participate in the Asian Athletics Championships, gang-raped a Korean woman. The prosecution will work to ensure that a sentence appropriate to the gravity of the offense is imposed.”
