Actor Hyun Bin is stepping into a new role in support of national security efforts.
On April 7, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced that Hyun Bin has been appointed as an honorary counterintelligence agent. The appointment aims to raise public awareness about the concept and importance of counterintelligence following recent revisions to espionage laws.
Counterintelligence refers to activities designed to detect, prevent, and counter foreign intelligence operations that threaten national security and interests. With the revised law, the scope has expanded beyond North Korea to include foreign entities more broadly.
Hyun Bin previously portrayed an NIS agent in the 2023 film 'The Point Men,' earning recognition for his role. Through this new honorary position, he is expected to contribute to promoting a broader understanding of counterintelligence among the public.
An NIS official stated, “The importance of counterintelligence is increasing amid growing concerns over advanced technology leaks and defense industry secrets. We will strive to meet public expectations together with Hyun Bin.”
Meanwhile, Hyun Bin also appeared in the Disney+ series 'Made in Korea,' which was released in December last year.
