Prosecutors have launched a supplementary investigation into the death of the late film director Kim Chang Min, as renewed attention on the case continues to spark controversy.

On April 5, the Namyangju branch of the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors’ Office announced that it has formed a dedicated investigation team for the fatal assault case involving the director. The team is led by the head of the Criminal Division 2 and consists of three prosecutors and five investigators.

Following the announcement, public reactions poured in online, with comments such as, “Only now they act because it became a social issue,” “Does someone have to die for authorities to take action?” “May he rest in peace,” and “It’s long overdue, but those responsible should finally be punished.”

Director Kim Chang Min was assaulted in October of last year while dining with his son at a restaurant in Sutaek-dong, Guri. A dispute broke out with another group who had been drinking, leading to the attack. He was rushed to the hospital but fell into a coma due to a cerebral hemorrhage. After receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, he was declared brain-dead in November and ultimately passed away. Through organ donation, he saved the lives of four people.

At the time, police investigated the case using nearby CCTV footage and witness statements. In October, they applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 20s on charges of fatal assault, but the request was denied.

Later, following a request from the bereaved family and a supplementary investigation order from prosecutors, authorities conducted additional inquiries. During this process, another man in his 20s was added as a suspect, and a second arrest warrant was requested, but it was also denied. The court cited reasons such as the suspects having stable residences.

The suspects have since been forwarded to prosecutors without detention. However, it has been reported that the bereaved family has not received any apology or contact from them. Adding to the tragedy, Kim’s son, who has a developmental disability and was present at the scene, is reportedly still unaware of his father’s death.

Director Kim Chang Min produced the 2019 short film Exit 3 of Guui Station and participated as part of the art team in films such as 'Keys to the Heart,' 'The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion,' 'The Witness,' 'The Drug King,' and 'Firefighter.'
