South Korean authorities have launched a major investigation into Park Wang Yeol, a high-profile drug offender who had previously fled overseas, signaling a potential reopening of the infamous 'Burning Sun' scandal involving Seungri, the former K-pop star at the center of the controversy.
At a press briefing on April 2, Yu Jae Sung, Acting Director of the National Police Agency, was asked about the Park Wang Yeol investigation and the possibility of revisiting the 'Burning Sun' case. He said, “If any connections are later confirmed, we will proceed according to the law and principles.” While no evidence currently links Seungri or other celebrities directly to the new investigation, authorities noted that overlaps with international drug networks could broaden the probe into the entertainment sector.
Park Wang Yeol has already been repatriated to South Korea through coordinated efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government agencies. Yu stated, “The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency has been designated as the central investigation unit, with 39 dedicated personnel and five related agencies conducting an intensive, full-scale investigation. We will thoroughly pursue all remaining criminal activity and track illicit profits to the end.”
During the briefing, reporters asked whether any prominent figures in politics or entertainment were implicated. Yu declined to comment on specifics, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The police also indicated plans for extensive international cooperation to tackle transnational drug crimes. Yu noted, “Most drugs entering our country are imported rather than domestically produced. We have established close collaboration with domestic agencies such as the Customs Service and the Prosecutor’s Office, as well as international bodies including the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Interpol.”
He added that the upcoming June operation, the third phase of the global initiative “Breaking Chains,” will expand its focus to drug-related crimes, further strengthening cooperation with participating countries.
