Actress Hwang Jung Eum has found herself at the center of controversy after offering free toys to the public, with some critics accusing her of distributing “waste.” However, a firsthand account from an attendee is now drawing attention for dramatically shifting public opinion.

Recently, a post was uploaded to the social media platform Threads by a user identified as 'A,' who said they had personally visited Hwang Jung Eum’s toy giveaway event.

'A' wrote, “After reading the recent articles, I felt heavy-hearted. As someone who was actually there, I wanted to share exactly what I saw.” The user continued, “To start with, the atmosphere on site - although the toys had been used by children, they were much cleaner than I expected and were well organized. It was set up thoughtfully so that those in need could comfortably take what they wanted.”

A, who selected toy cars and airplanes for their nieces and nephews, added, “Honestly, it was my first time seeing a celebrity in person, so I was a bit nervous. But she smiled first and greeted me, asking, ‘Are these for your nieces and nephews?’ While I was choosing toys, she explained things like, ‘This one makes sounds,’ and ‘Kids really loved this one.’ What impressed me most was that, despite being a celebrity, she sincerely said, ‘I hope your nieces and nephews like them.’ It didn’t feel like a routine courtesy.

The user went on to say, “As someone who visited in person, what I felt was that something no longer needed by one person can become a great joy to someone else. At least from what I experienced, it wasn’t a place for ‘throwing things away,’ but a place for ‘sharing.’ Seeing my nieces and nephews smile, I think I’ll remember that day with gratitude.”

Alongside the post, 'A' shared photos of the toys received from Hwang Jung Eum. The items appeared so clean that it was hard to believe they were secondhand, drawing further attention online.

In response to the post, one commenter wrote, “Everyone who actually went seems satisfied, yet third parties are the ones criticizing - what a strange situation.” A replied, “I also found that quite ironic.”

Earlier, on the 12th, Hwang Jung Eum announced on her personal social media that she would be giving away toys for free at her home in Itaewon, Yongsan District, Seoul. However, after photos showed the toys placed on a sandy floor, some critics questioned whether it was simply a way to dispose of trash, calling the setup “careless.”

After the rebuttal post from an attendee gained traction, Hwang Jung Eum personally addressed the issue, writing, “Thank you. I wasn’t responding because the articles weren’t factual. I’m giving away toys, baby clothes, and books, so please help spread the word,” expressing her frustration over what she described as unfair coverage.
