Actress Hwang Jung Eum addressed the controversy surrounding her recent toy giveaway, after some media outlets described it as a “waste disposal” rather than a charitable act. As firsthand accounts from attendees surfaced online, the situation has taken a new turn.
On February 12, Hwang Jung Eum shared on her personal social media, “I’m giving away toys for free. My child used them cleanly, so if you need them, please feel free to take them.” The giveaway took place at her home in Itaewon, Yongsan District, Seoul.
However, photos from the scene showed the toys placed on the ground near what appeared to be a garbage collection area, prompting criticism online. Some questioned whether it was truly a giveaway or simply “dumping,” while others described it as lacking sincerity. A toy with a broken handle was also pointed out as problematic. The controversy spread quickly, with certain media outlets even using the term “waste giveaway,” intensifying the backlash.
On February 14, a netizen identified as A, who claimed to have visited the site and received items, posted an online account that challenged the reports. “The article was written strangely. It didn’t look like waste at all,” A stated. “In the spacious yard, children’s items and books were available for free, while adult clothes, bags, and shoes were sold more like a flea market.”
A continued, “The toys weren’t only on the ground; they were also neatly arranged on a car-shaped bed. It didn’t feel like a waste at all. They even provided shopping bags and were very kind. I don’t understand why the article was written that way.”
Hwang Jung Eum personally replied to the post, writing, “Thank you. Since the article wasn’t true anyway, I wasn’t planning to respond… I’m giving away toys, baby clothes, and books, so please help spread the word.” Her comment hinted at her frustration while maintaining a composed tone.
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung Eum has recently faced multiple controversies, including receiving a suspended sentence on embezzlement charges, issues related to unregistered entertainment business operations, and a divorce. As a result, this latest incident has been met with heightened public sensitivity.
Public opinion remains divided. Some argue that, as a public figure, she should have exercised greater caution, while others view the reports as excessive and distorted.
