Actress Han So Hee has opened up candidly about past social media controversies and how she has come to view public scrutiny.
In a recent interview related to her upcoming film 'Project Y', Han So Hee spoke at length about the controversies surrounding her, reflecting calmly on how she felt at the time two years ago, how her mindset has since changed, and what it means to her to work as an actress.
Addressing the backlash tied to social media, Han said, “I think reactions like that inevitably come with this line of work.”
She continued, “Back then, I tried very hard to accept the public’s opinions from multiple perspectives. Ten people can’t all think the same way. There may be things I overlook, and rather than dismissing everything as mindless criticism, I tried to be cautious and consider that some of it could actually be helpful feedback.”
She also touched on the perspectives of her teenage female fanbase, often referred to as Gen Z. Han remarked, “When I look at Gen Z kids, it feels like they have a strong sense of self now,” adding, “Many of them know how to take in what’s right and filter out what’s harmful when consuming media.” She went on to say, “That also makes me feel a sense of responsibility.”
When asked about the period when public attention felt especially overwhelming, Han explained that her “attitude toward being watched” has changed. “I think there’s a difference between then and now,” she said. “Back then, I scrutinized my own standards almost excessively. I kept asking myself why I thought the way I did and why I was receiving that kind of attention, looking at myself very subjectively.”
Now, she says, she tries to take a more objective approach. “In a way, public interest can be seen as something you’re fortunate to have,” Han noted. “Most people want that attention, and I already have it. Whether it’s criticism or judgment, I see it as feedback that I can hear up close.”
She added, “These days, I try to evaluate myself objectively. I work on what needs improvement and let go of what’s unnecessary, and I’m learning how to accept those things more easily. I think it’s something I naturally have to bear because of the nature of my job.”
In closing, Han described her current self as “still very lacking.” She shared, “I’m someone who believes there’s no end to learning. As an actress, which is the career I chose, I want to keep doing this work until I hear people say, ‘She’s actually good at what she does.’”
