The agency representing the K-pop group Highlight has officially responded to allegations surrounding artist fees for the ‘Wonju K-pop Festival,’ which was recently canceled.
On October 30, Around US Entertainment released a statement saying, “We would like to correct misinformation circulating on social media regarding the 'Wonju K-pop Festival.' The performance fee for Highlight is completely different from the amount that was disclosed online, and we have already received part of the agreed contract payment.”
Earlier, Kim Ga Yeon, the head of the Korea Culture and Arts Education Promotion Institute, which organized the event, publicly apologized on social media for delays in refunds following the festival’s cancellation. She also disclosed the appearance fees for seven participating artists, including Highlight, fromis_9, KISS OF LIFE, FIFTY FIFTY, H1-KEY, tripleS, and Maktub.
According to the post, Highlight’s total performance fee was listed as 165 million KRW (about 115,509 USD), with 82.5 million KRW (about 57,754 USD) reportedly paid. Similar details were provided for the other artists.
Kim explained, “Since the agency fees were quite high, we discussed the possibility of artists returning part of the payment. Highlight’s side refunded a portion of their fee, and we have made similar requests to other agencies.” She added, “It’s extremely difficult to raise 300 million KRW (about 210,016 USD) in the provinces. We currently have no funds available for ticket refunds, as approximately 70 million KRW (about 49,030 USD) has already been spent on program development and deposits.”
In response, Around US Entertainment stated, “Although the event was canceled due to the organizer’s circumstances, we refunded 50% of the advance payment, 22 million KRW (approximately 15,400 USD), on October 13 in good faith and at the agency’s request.” The company continued, “We have been closely monitoring the situation, aware that many fans have yet to receive refunds. We are deeply concerned about the spread of misinformation and will do everything possible to prevent further harm to both Highlight and their fans caused by inaccurate claims or mismanagement.”
Originally scheduled to take place on October 10–11 at Wonju Sports Complex, the ‘Wonju K-pop Festival’ was abruptly canceled on October 2, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among fans as refund processes continue to be delayed.
