[INTERVIEW] OMEGA X's first sub-unit OX:N talks about their first mini-album ‘N’

In June, OX:N introduced themselves as OMEGA X’s first sub-unit with the project, ‘N.’

The album title ‘N’ is a clever play on words. It represents the Roman numeral “IV” for four, symbolizing the four members of the unit: Jaehan, Xen, Jehyun, and Yechan. The ‘N’ also signifies ‘n,’ which represents the infinite number of possibilities the group OX:N will explore in the future.

Through the album, OX:N showcased their versatility with a diverse range of genres, including pop, rock, and ballads. True to the meaning behind their name, the album explores a variety of sounds across its five tracks: “SUIT & TIE,” “YOU,” “LET ME IN,” “ORPHEUS,” and “CAUSE OF YOU.”

Following the unit’s debut, allkpop chatted with the members on their project, their favorite tracks on the album, and their goals as a group. Read our exclusive interview with OX:N below!

allkpop: First of all, congratulations on your unit debut! How does it feel to introduce OX:N and debut this time as a sub-unit of OMEGA X?

Jaehan: I’m happy to be able to continue sharing our music and stages with our fans. Please look forward to OX:N’s activities in the future.

Xen: It feels especially meaningful because we are trying something new. Please look forward to it.

Jehyun: I’m excited and happy to show fans a new side of us!

Yechan: Thank you so much for your congratulations! It feels rewarding to finally debut as a sub-unit after months of preparation, and that time feels worth it.

allkpop: Could you tell us what was the process like picking the members for OX:N? What was your initial reaction to the lineup?

Jaehan: To me, OX:N is like the group that protects OMEGA X. During OMEGA X’s hiatus, we wanted OX:N to fill that time with growth through music and performances.

Jehyun: When it was decided that there would be four members in the group, we all felt a big responsibility to work very hard.

Yechan: The four members are different in our own ways, but I think that makes us a stronger team. There were many diverse ideas from our different perspectives.

allkpop: What’s the meaning behind your name, OX:N, as well as the album’s title ‘N’? What’s the message you’re trying to convey with the album in general?

Jaehan: OX:N marks both a new beginning and a bridge. That is why the ‘N’ in the name of our unit and title of our album has many meanings. It symbolizes the line that connects the 11 members of OMEGA X, the representation of the number 4 in Roman numerals through the ‘N’ logo, and ‘N’ as an unknown number representing the process of growth of each member as they search for love and their identities.

Jehyun: If you separate the lines that make up the letter ‘N’ and take out the middle diagonal line, it becomes the number 11. This represents the 11 members of OMEGA X, with OX:N in the middle. As such, we want to convey the meaning that OX:N is a group that connects the 11 members and exists for the entirety of OMEGA X.

Yechan: Also, ‘N’ represents the connection between the past, the present, and all of OMEGA X.

allkpop: There are five tracks on the album. Which one do you think was the hardest to record in the studio?

Jaehan: I think recording the title track, “YOU,” was the most difficult. I re-recorded parts of the song many times to perfect my English pronunciation and convey the feeling of the song. That’s also why it took a long time.

Xen: It was “YOU,” because it was hard for me to keep up the vibe I got from the demo. But we got through it!

Jehyun: “SUIT&TIE,” “YOU,” and “ORPHEUS” have lyrics only in English, so we spent a lot of time working on the pronunciation and rhythm of the English words.

Yechan: I think “SUIT&TIE” was the most difficult. The vocal range of the song was not difficult to capture, but I spent a lot of time thinking about how to embody the vibe and feeling of the guide recording from the producers.

allkpop: Are there any memorable moments behind the scenes during the filming of the music video for “YOU” that you could share with us?

Jaehan: I enjoyed filming with the thought of seeing fans after a while and bringing them new music and a music video.

Jehyun: The sleeveless top that Yechan wore that showed off his shoulders and biceps is especially memorable!

Yechan: There were many gestures or movements we needed to improvise and make on the spot, and I think we were able to show a lot of our natural sides.

allkpop: Which song caught your attention the first time you listened to it, and is that still your favorite song right now?

Jaehan: “SUIT&TIE” left an especially strong impression on me. It was a style of song that I’ve always wanted to try, and I immediately liked it the first time we listened to it.

Xen: My personal favorite would have to be “LET ME IN” because I think it captures the mood and direction we were going for, which was to highlight the OX:N members’ vocal strengths.

Jehyun: Mine is “LET ME IN”! The feeling of the song is one I personally enjoy, and I am particularly attached to it because Yechan and I choreographed it ourselves.

Yechan: I liked “SUIT&TIE” as soon as I heard it. I think the unique rhythm and sound of the song are quite charming.

allkpop: Lastly, please leave a message for allkpop readers and your fans. Feel free to share the goals you have for your unit as well!

Jaehan: We will continue to present you with good music and performances. I always want to make good music, and that is also the goal I hope to set for myself. I would love to know what allkpop readers’ and our fans’ favorite song on our debut album is!

Xen: I hope that through OX:N, we will be able to meet fans with even more activities. Please look forward to it and continue to show us your love.

Jehyun: We will continue to show you different sides of us, so please look forward to it and send us a lot of love! My goal is that, just like the name of our unit, to work as a bridge for OMEGA X and the entire group will be able to come back together very soon and see our fans again, who have been waiting for OMEGA X for so long.
