Actor Song Young Kyu, who had recently made headlines for a drunk driving incident, has been found dead. He was 55 years old.
According to officials from the Yongin Dongbu Police Station on August 4, Song was discovered deceased in a vehicle parked within a residential complex in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, at around 8 a.m. Police responded to the scene following a report made by a woman. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of death and surrounding circumstances.
The actor had sparked controversy earlier when it was revealed that he had been caught driving under the influence in June.
On June 19, at approximately 11 p.m., Song Young Kyu allegedly drove under the influence for about 5 kilometers from Giheung-gu to Cheoin-gu in Yongin after drinking with acquaintances. His blood alcohol level at the time was reportedly over 0.08%, which is grounds for license revocation. He was sent to prosecution without detention.
Following the incident, Song Young Kyu stepped down from the play 'Shakespeare in Love', in which he had been performing. The production team of ENA’s ongoing Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects', in which he had already completed filming, stated that they would "edit out as much of his appearance as possible." However, SBS’s 'The Winning Try' production team explained that “his role is minor, making it difficult to edit him out immediately.” He appeared unedited in the July 26 episode.
