Season 2 of Netflix’s hit series 'Squid Game' was not nominated for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the most prestigious television awards in the United States.
On July 15, the Television Academy announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, and 'Squid Game' was absent from major categories such as Outstanding Drama Series.
According to Forbes, "Squid Game was expected to receive nominations in several categories, including Drama Series, acting, production design, visual effects, and stunt performance, but was ultimately shut out." The publication added, however, that “Season 2 still boasts an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.”
Back in 2022, Season 1 of 'Squid Game' made history by earning 14 Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Actor, and Supporting Actor/Actress categories. It was the most nominations ever for a non-English-language drama at the Emmys.
At that year’s ceremony, 'Squid Game' won six awards, including Outstanding Directing (Hwang Dong Hyuk), Outstanding Lead Actor (Lee Jung Jae), Guest Actress in drama series (Lee Yoo Mi), Visual Effects, Stunt Performance, and Production Design.
Some analysts believe the reason Season 2 failed to secure nominations this year is due to its lack of narrative closure, as Squid Game Season 2 and 3 are essentially one continuous story, but were released as separate seasons, which may have hurt perceptions of completeness.
However, Season 3, which was released in June 2025, is eligible for next year’s Emmys and may still be nominated then. This year’s eligibility period covers shows released between June 1, 2024, and May 31, 2025. Squid Game Season 2 was released in December 2024, while Season 3 came out in June 2025.
