Oh Young Soo is set to resume his appeal trial in the ongoing sexual misconduct case.
The 6-1 Criminal Division of the Suwon District Court of Appeals, presided over by Judge Kwak Hyung Seop, will hold the next hearing for Oh Young Soo’s appeal on August 12. The actor is facing charges of forcible molestation.
Originally, the verdict for the appeal was scheduled for June 3 but was postponed to June 10 due to overlapping with the presidential election. It was then rescheduled again to August 1, before the court decided to resume hearings in August.
Oh Young Soo is accused of hugging the victim 'A' on a walking trail in August 2017, allegedly saying, “Let me hug you once.” He is also accused of kissing her on the cheek in front of her residence in September of the same year. The victim filed a police complaint in December 2021. Although the case was initially dismissed, she filed an objection, prompting prosecutors to reopen the investigation. Oh Young Soo was subsequently indicted without detention in 2022.
He acknowledged walking on the trail and visiting her residence, but denied any wrongdoing. However, in March 2023, the first trial court found him guilty, sentencing him to 8 months in prison, suspended for 2 years.
The court stated, “The victim’s testimony is consistent and contains details that could only be described by someone who experienced the incident. Her diary entries and counseling records also support her claims.”
In his final statement during the first trial, Oh Young Soo said, “At my age, it’s shameful to be standing in court. Even now, I believe my actions and words at the time would not be considered harassment.” Both the prosecution and Oh Young Soo appealed the verdict. Witness testimony is expected to take place during the upcoming appeal hearing.
Meanwhile, Oh Young Soo is known for his role as Oh Il Nam, the mastermind behind the games in the Netflix series 'Squid Game.' He gained widespread recognition as the beloved “Kkanbu Grandpa.”
In January 2022, he made history as the first Korean actor to win Best Supporting Actor in Television at the Golden Globe Awards for his role in 'Squid Game.'
