Benzodiazepines are not meant for long-term use. Therefore, anyone taking them longer than 24 hours is being harmed. Benzodiazepines cause an iatrogenic brain injury and central nervous system damage by downregulating GABA receptors. One is not addicted but they develop dependency because littler research has been done on the long-term use of benzos. It takes years to recover and sadly, the anxiety and panic that many use benzos for ends up turning paradoxical and the patient begins to feel worse anxiety and panic than they did before being prescribed the benzos. Benzos also cause depression, suicidal thoughts and should be tapered very slowly. I can't imagine TOP having to stop this medication for military service. It is extremely dangerous to stop a benzo adruptly, it must be slowly tapered which generally takes 1-2 years to get off these class of drugs. Prolonged benzo withdrawal symptoms last years - lifetime. Wish him the best, he is such a talented artist and hate to see him having to go through this.
