The U.S. Embassy in Seoul has reported a bomb threat to the Seoul Metropolitan Police on Korea's Liberation Day, August 15 KST.
Reportedly, the Embassy received an email around 5 AM on this day claiming that "a highly-explosive bomb has been installed in a public facility frequented by numerous visitors."
The police have confirmed that the sender used the name of the Japanese lawyer Takahiro Karasawa, a name which has been repeatedly used in recent bomb threat cases across the country. The same name previously emerged around 2023, as members of a political online community used it to refer to a fake cult leader and exploited it to send fake terror threats to public institutions.
The police stated, "We are currently investigating this case in connection to recent threats which used the same name and similar wording."
So far, the police have found no evidence of explosives installed in any public facilities.
Meanwhile, a similar threat was received this past weekend at the KSPO Dome in Seoul hours before The Boyz went on stage for the final performance of their 'The Blaze' world tour in Seoul. Approximately 2,000 attendees were evacuated, and no explosives were found at the location.
A similar threat was received on August 7 via the Seoul Foreign Resident Center and on August 11 via Gwangju Shinsegye Department Store, but no evidence of explosives were found on either site.
