[Song & MV Review] FLASHE - 'Lip Bomb'

FLASHE

Girl group FLASHE decided to start off 2016 with a change of concepts. Before the 4 members donned honey girl charms through "My Day," but soon decided to show a more inciting side through some outfit and choreography changes. They show off the sex appeal quite comfortably, almost as if they were always pushing this concept all along. However, the revamped style, and the song "Lip Bomb," isn't enough to win over the masses.

"Lip Bomb," granted, is a clever pun on lip balm, but it isn't anything out of the ordinary. It's generic, not even worth a being called a carbon copy because I have heard many catchier songs than this. The song really seemed like it would start off cool because the girls had an awesome style that was sexy without being over the top like Stellar has done from time to time.

The girls start the MV in a Kakaotalk group chat talking about how one member is meeting a man and the other is making a lip balm (the secret to winning him over, we can assume) and then that is when the beat drops, along with my expectations. That chorus is a giant disappointment with that whiney, repetitive "Lip bomb" chorus. It is not even a whiney catchy sound that you can't resist singing...it is just there and unpleasant in my (maybe harsh) opinion. The instrumental sounds more promising with the electric guitars and subtle "ohh ahhs" in the background. They could have been utilized in a better way without that chorus. Listen for yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The lyrics for "Lip Bomb" are rather similar to many other sexy songs with cliches like "What should I do" and talking about their "sweet lips" - news FLASHE, you and the rest of K-Pop have sweet lips! When it comes to the rap...I"ll leave it up to the AOA fans to comment on that one - just saying.

The MV setting and quality isn't anything to go gaga over either. I get it, they're still unknown in K-Pop, which is why I commend them for doing their best with what was given to them! I will say they were working what they had, and some of the lighting and video effects were nicely done, but it did't escape the feeling that the group is clearly working on a small budget.

Their dance reminds me of Stellar's "Vibrato" and has few creative pieces that make it their own. The MV doesn't really lead much into the story line they created in the beginning. The only real compliment I can offer to these ladies is that they clearly have talent to offer and are easy on the eyes as they all looked really clean and pretty with this new concept! Other than that, I can't say I'll be expecting anything more in the future unless they catch me off guard and wow me by surprise!
