misc.
10. #10 EXID - 'Up & Down'
EXID were suffering from nugu-dom and then in Q3 2014, a fancam video of Hani dancing to "Up & Down" went viral and overnight, the girls were household names. That's the power of the internet. The track received 7.7% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
9. #9 2NE1 - 'I Am The Best'
My non-Kpop friend heard this song on a Microsoft commercial and said this song is bangin'. This song propelled 2NE1 to start receiving more attention from the media overseas and it won song of the year at the 2011 MAMA awards. The track received 9.3% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
8. #8 TWICE - 'Cheer Up'
It's surprising to see a song that was released recently be on the list but it appears this song has had a profound effect on the Korean audience. We're enjoying a resurgence of the "Big 3" girl group power with Black Pink and Red Velvet, and it appears TWICE might be currently leading the pack. The track received 10.8% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
7. #7 S.E.S - 'I'm Your Girl'
SM Entertainment was enjoying a lot of success in the mid 90's with H.O.T and they wanted to replicate the same success by debuting a new girl group. "I'm Your Girl" was an immediate success and other entertainment companies scrambled to create their own girl groups. The track received 10.9% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
6. #6 Fin.K.L - 'Eternal Love'
Fin.K.L was popular but they were seen as a step below rival group S.E.S. That all changed in 1999 when they released "Eternal Love." The album containing "Eternal Love" went on to sell more than 700,000 copies! The track received 11.7% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
5. #5 Lee Hyori - '10 Minutes'
Technically not a "girl group" but Sports Donga included solo artists as the panelists chose these tracks. Hyori was popular in Fin.K.L but she didn't achieve superstardom until she went solo and released "10 minutes" in 2003. The song was so popular it won 3 of the 4 Daesang awards that year. The track received 12% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
4. #4 BoA - 'No.1'
In 2002, BoA had already established herself as a superstar in Japan, becoming the first Korean artist to sell over a million copies of an album. She didn't achieve this same superstardom status in Korea until she released "No.1." Like the song title, the track achieved #1 on numerous charts and her album sold more thant 500,000 copies in Korea that year. The track received 14.6% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
3. #3 IU - 'Good Day'
Before 2010, IU was seen as a cute artist and it wasn't until the release of "Good Day" where she achieved national stardom. After this song became a megahit, she earned the nickname of the "Nation's Little Sister." The track received 16.5% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
2. #2 Wonder Girls - 'Tell Me'
Girls groups weren't that popular after the initial OG (S.E.S) girl group era ended but that all changed in 2007 when the lovely Wonder Girls unleashed "Tell Me" and took Korea over by storm. The choreography was cute and easy to dance to, and everyone in Korea was doing the "Tell Me" dance. The track received 30.9% of the total vote from panelists surveyed.
1. #1 Girls' Generation - 'Gee'
Released in 2009, this song pushed Girls' Generation into superstardom.
