The film 'The King's Warden' (directed by Jang Hang Joon) has emerged as this year’s box-office champion, surpassing 5 million admissions in just 18 days since its release.
According to the Korean Film Council’s Integrated Computer Network for Theater Tickets, 'The King's Warden' has exceeded 5,000,616 cumulative admissions as of the afternoon of February 21. The film reached the milestone faster than 'The King and the Clown,' the first historical film to surpass 10 million moviegoers in Korea. 'The King and the Clown' achieved 5 million admissions in 20 days, meaning 'The King's Warden' reached the mark two days earlier.
Its box office pace mirrors that of 'Masquerade,' which ultimately drew 12 million viewers. Since February 9, 'The King's Warden' has firmly held the No. 1 spot at the overall box office. 'The King's Warden' tells the story of King Danjong (played by Park Ji Hoon), who was exiled to Cheongryeongpo. The film portrays the heartfelt friendship between the young dethroned king and village chief Um Heung Do (played by Yoo Hae Jin), who voluntarily follows him into exile.
Set in the aftermath of the Gyeyu Coup, the film sheds light on Danjong’s tragic fate. Powerful performances by Yoo Hae Jin, Park Ji Hoon, Yoo Ji Tae, and Jeon Mi Do deliver a resonant emotional impact, earning praise for successfully balancing humor and heartfelt drama.
