South Korean singer MC Mong (real name Shin Dong Hyun) is now under police investigation over allegations that he obtained sleeping pills through a proxy prescription. The controversy centers on suspicions that he received zolpidem, a controlled psychotropic drug, under someone else’s name. The case has been transferred to the local police station for verification of facts.
According to the police, on February 27, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul is reviewing the case after it was transferred on February 25. Shin Dong Hyun was reported for potential violations of the Narcotics Control Act and the Medical Service Act, and the case was handed over to the police station that has jurisdiction over his residence.
Previously, former Korean Medical Association president Lim Hyun Taek filed a complaint via the national public grievance system last month, alleging that Shin obtained zolpidem through a former manager. Lim stated in the complaint that because zolpidem is a controlled psychotropic substance, obtaining or using it under another person’s name could be illegal.
The case was initially assigned to a police station in the Daejeon region, where the complainant was questioned. After completing procedural steps, the investigation was transferred to Gangnam Police Station. The police are currently conducting their investigation based on the allegations.
