Im Hyun Taek, former president of the Korean Medical Association, has filed a criminal complaint against singer MC Mong over allegations involving the proxy prescription and receipt of zolpidem, a psychotropic medication.
The complaint was submitted through the National Petition System (People’s Sinmungo) and has since been transferred to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, where a review of the case is currently underway.
According to a report by Edaily on February 1, Im filed the complaint on January 30, requesting an investigation into whether MC Mong violated the Act on the Control of Narcotics and the Medical Service Act. The allegations center on claims that MC Mong received and consumed zolpidem prescribed under another person’s name.
In the complaint, Im stated, “Zolpidem is classified as a psychotropic drug, and even receiving or consuming a single tablet prescribed under another person’s name may constitute a legal violation.” He emphasized the seriousness of the matter, adding, “Drug-related allegations involving a public figure can undermine medical order and the nation’s narcotics management system.”
Beyond the act of receiving medication, the complaint also asks authorities to examine whether MC Mong may have requested a third party—such as a manager—to obtain the drug on his behalf, and whether such actions carry legal responsibility.
Previously, the same media outlet reported that it had obtained an audio recording in which MC Mong’s former manager claimed to have delivered zolpidem prescribed under his own name to the singer. In the recording, the former manager reportedly said, “I got it under my name and just gave it to him,” explaining how the medication was passed along.
The manager also stated, “I gave it to him because he asked,” suggesting that the transfer occurred at MC Mong’s request, a claim that has since sparked public controversy.
As the case is now under prosecutorial review, attention is focused on whether the allegations will lead to a formal investigation.
