Singer Jooheon of MONSTA X has shared his thoughts on returning as a solo artist.
According to his agency Starship Entertainment, Jooheon will release his second mini album ‘光 (INSANITY)’ at 6 PM KST today (January 5) through major online music platforms. At 8 PM KST, he will also hold a special comeback live via MONSTA X’s official YouTube channel.

The comeback live will be Jooheon’s first opportunity to connect with fans immediately following the album’s release. The broadcast will feature behind-the-scenes stories from the album’s production, an album unboxing, and live performances of his new songs. Through the live, Jooheon plans to personally share the message behind the album, his expanded musical world, and his sincerity as a solo artist.

Below is Jooheon’s full Q&A.
Q. How does it feel to return as a solo artist after two years and eight months?
A. I feel really happy and excited to share new music. I released my first solo album before enlisting, and now I’m releasing my second album after being discharged, which makes this comeback especially meaningful to me.
Q. Since you handled the lyrics, composition, and production for ‘光 (INSANITY),’ how did you decide on the tracklist?
A. I structured it the same way as my first album and focused on the emotional flow from track one through track seven. While my first album ‘LIGHTS’ conveyed the idea that “the darker it gets, the brighter the light,” this album expands that concept with ‘gwang,’ meaning both shining and madness, delivering the message that “you have to go crazy to truly shine.”
Q. The featuring lineup stands out, from Muhammad Ali’s voice sample to Tiger JK and IVE’s Rei. What was the inspiration behind this?
A. It’s an honor to incorporate the legendary Muhammad Ali’s quote, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Fans often call me “Honey,” and I’m frequently associated with a bee, so that quote felt perfect. I wanted to convey confidence and precision toward one’s goals. As for Rei, I’ve always loved her vocal tone, and I’m truly grateful she joined the project so willingly.

Q. What kind of song is the title track ‘STING’?
A. It’s a hip-hop track inspired by Muhammad Ali’s quote and carries the strong mixtape-style vibe I’ve always loved. As a rapper who values performance, it’s a powerful song where intense choreography and music come together.
Q. Is there a B-side you’re particularly attached to?
A. "NO BRAIN NO PAIN." It has a warmth similar to MONSTA X’s "Stand Up" and "I Love You," as well as my solo track "Don’t Worry Be Happy." The song carries a message about breaking through overthinking, inspired by my time in the military and my belief of “just do it, just go.”
Q. The boxing concept visuals are drawing attention. What did you want to emphasize visually?
A. Competition, sweat, perseverance, and passion. Boxing is a sport where accumulated effort is proven in the ring, and I wanted to express that intensity.
Q. The phrase “you have to go crazy to shine” leaves a strong impression. Have you experienced moments of that level of immersion yourself?
A. Every moment is immersion for me. I always want to give my best, even when I’m exhausted. I believe that when you fully immerse yourself, that’s when you shine the brightest.
Q. Any words for MONBEBE?
A. My beloved MONBEBE, I put passion into every album, but this one especially reflects who I am. I hope you give it lots of love. MONBEBE is my most precious light, so let’s shine wildly together. With my solo promotions, group activities, and a new MONSTA X world tour ahead, please look forward to what’s coming. I love you, MONBEBE.
