In an ongoing legal dispute over the copyright of NewJeans’ music videos, advertising production company Dolphiner’s Film has filed an appeal after losing the first trial against the group’s agency, ADOR.
According to legal sources on January 21st KST, Dolphiner’s Film submitted an appeal the previous day to the Civil Division 63 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Lee Gyu Young, contesting the first-instance ruling.
Earlier, on January 13th, the court ruled, “The defendant, Dolphiner’s Film Co., Ltd., shall pay the plaintiff, ADOR, 1 billion won, along with delayed damages calculated at an annual rate of 12 percent from December 14th, 2024, until the date of full payment.”
However, the court dismissed ADOR’s claims against director Shin Woo Seok, who directed NewJeans’ music videos, rejecting that portion of the lawsuit.
ADOR had filed a civil lawsuit in September 2024 seeking approximately 1.1 billion won in damages from Dolphiner’s Film and director Shin, citing liability for breach of contract and tortious conduct.
In addition to filing the appeal, Dolphiner’s Film also applied for a stay of compulsory execution the previous day. This move is widely interpreted as an attempt to prevent ADOR from initiating provisional enforcement of the damages award. Provisional enforcement is a legal mechanism that allows the winning party to execute a court ruling even before the judgment becomes final.
