A popular large cafe in Jeju Island, South Korea, is under investigation for illegally converting forest land into commercial property.
The case has drawn attention because the name of Bbaekga, a member of the famous K-pop group Koyote, has been mentioned in connection with the cafe.
The cafe, which became famous around three years ago for being operated by a celebrity, features walking paths, sculptures, and a spacious parking lot. However, authorities found that most of the land, about 6,000 square meters, is technically forest land and was converted without proper permits.
The cafe’s owner, Mr. A, told ExSports News, “Bbaekga is not involved at all. I’m cautious because his name keeps being dragged into this and exaggerated. I think the police investigation should come first.”
He also explained, “We realized too late that the land conversion was illegal and tried to make improvements, but due to financial constraints, we were unable to proceed.”
Regarding Bbaekga, he ended his contract as co-representative of the cafe in April. He was involved only in interior design work when the cafe was being set up and was not aware of any real estate issues. Bbaekga is a rapper, photographer, and entrepreneur, and previously mentioned on a broadcast that he registered an interior business for the cafe.
Authorities in Seogwipo City, Jeju, have requested a formal investigation into the land use violations.
